I like this picture of a young Ukrainian actor—not only because it was taken in my hometown but also because it captures a perfectly normal, civil, and decent person. Of course, there was no way to see the remarkable bravery behind that boyish face back then, but today we know.

My dad risked his life as a CIC agent inside the military of communist Czechoslovakia in the early 1950s. He paid with 14 years in a forced labor camp. He loved America and kept the U.S. flag on his desk all his life.

I’m glad he didn’t live to see this shameful day.
