For those who don’t know how to do Alt-text on pics, memes, screenshots, etc., a small thread:
For everyone who thinks Alt-text is text in your *post* that describes your photo: No! It is *attached* to the photo! You can still do a silly post about your pic *and* do alt-text! Example:

They are more than 5.5 meters tall and often tower above their surroundings. But in the forests they call home, giraffes are not always the tallest things around!
This is a Southern, or Cape Giraffe in a lush forest area of Kruger National Park, SA.

My teen, who had dreamt of being an astrophysicist, just told me he wants to go to law school because, “Science isn’t going to be a priority in the US in the future…I don’t want a job where I’ll be constantly worried my funding will be taken away.”

Gutting. How many future scientists have we lost?

Okay I’m finally all caught up with this post (yay) for #ArtAdventCalendar day 6! One of about a gazillion beetle-inspired manicures I’ve done over the years. This one is Calligrapha beetle elytra! Sadly in real life they’re not shimmery and shifty like these ones, but they deserve the glow-up.

#ArtAdventCalendar day 5 (almost caught up!) this was a fun mani, and an unusual subject matter for me: fishing buoys! I took inspiration from the wonderful displays found on fishing shacks along the shore in Cape Cod, and chose a magnetic background polish that shifts and shimmers like water.

I’ve now had multiple sources tell me the UK NHS is removing the CDC from its list of reliable sources.

Welcome to irrelevance.

Now, see, this is the way to do it. Just say, “I was wrong.”
Steyer: We have to break this cycle of rising costs so we can continue to deliver care, and single-payer is the way to go.

Meiselas: What do you say to critics who say, “I remember when Tom ran for president and ran ads saying he didn’t support the single-payer?”

Steyer: I was wrong.

Watching teen boys try to talk to girls they like clears up a lot for me when I was that age and thought boys didn’t like me.

They might like you they just have no idea what to do about it. TBH this also applies to many grown men.

A late medieval pocket sundial from Freiburg. The portable sundial once contained a small compass in the circular recess, helping to align the sundial along the north–south axis so the correct time could be determined.

fascinating 🧵
A very important thread. When I was probably no more than 10, I saw this picture of the woman known as Harlow in the Philly Inquirer. A little babygay, I was shocked that such a glamour queen could live in my hometown and even more shocked to see her described as "a former man."

It only took four of us making a two-minute public comment about the library at the city council meeting for the councilors to restore the funding the mayor’s office had cut.
I really can't emphasize enough that if you care about local politics, all you gotta do is show up. Just a regular schmegular person showing up. Literally just show up consistently in person and within a remarkably short amount of time, you will have a shocking amount of influence.

"The Idaho man’s corneas were also donated, and ocular grafts were transplanted in three people. The three patients’ grafts were removed, & one tested positive for rabies. None of the three patients had symptoms of rabies, but they were being treated with preventive drugs, the report said."
This is extremely rare and extremely awful. “The report said that organ donations are not routinely tested for rabies “because of its rarity in humans in the United States and the complexity of diagnostic testing.” @jackiantonovich.bsky.social
