@olongnolo on Twitter. Transportation engineer, interested in transit and housing. Los Angeles (SGV/South Bay).
There's a JR East merch and Eastern Japan Travel Information distribution popup this weekend at the Tokyo Central near the Torrance Airport (transit accessible via haha lol, the 232 I guess). Featuring Shinkansen livery chopsticks. I didn't even know there was a Tokyo Central there tbh

A joint meeting for two projects along Garvey Ave in Monterey Park: one (city, funded by the 710 stub reallocation) to implement curb extensions and another (SGVCOG "SGV Forward") to improve transit service. This is the 2nd round of meeting for the MPK one and the first here for the SGVCOG one.

These sort of ones (which I guess are the ornamental ones you mean), as opposed to the ~20 cm diameter ones with a stronger foundation that make sense where the goal is to absorb kinetic energy to protect pedestrians or for access control. Vegetation btw sidewalk and parking is also nice yeah

An American city implementing the International Best Practices Corner Accessibility Solution of full corner depression ("blended transition", hated and reviled by lesser engineers in the US) + bollards is rare and commendable. You also have very low curbs.

Metro staff (and board lol no) getting microtargetted like DOD staff on WMATA

Response (I will add alt text transcribing the image if this is something you need, but generally take the position that lack of automated labelling in 2025 is a failure on Bluesky's part)

Pickleball courts. I find it funny how ITE officially does not have any detached SFH trip gen data whatsoever postdating 1990

My alma mater's ITE chapter racks another credit in that most esteemed application of the statistical arts, the Trip Generation Manual (12th edition)

Will the hated historic zone prevent SB 79 from reaching its full potential in LA? Well, as @cohenhouse.bsky.social says, we should probably temper ourselves until the actual language of the amendment comes out. But until then, we can look at which areas have stations overlapping with HPOZs.

Berkeley TIMS has (has had for a little while now) an AV crash and VMT visualization dashboard now

WSCCOG staff recommends awarding the BRT network design contract to STV. Nelson\Nygaard and TY Lin also submitted proposals. The goal remains to "ensure at least one quick-build corridor can be implemented before the LA28 Games". Will see anything interesting's in the proposals via PRA request.

(the southwestern US design events are like 1.5x more intense than Europe incl Italy but that's not the big driver here...)

Is <img 1 bottom detail> what Italian catch basins(=caditoia) usually look like in section? How much do they usually cost? I'm finding €1-2k per

The US stormwater runoff mgmt philosophy leads to draining fewer streets directly, at longer spacings, with larger catch basins, contra Euro drainage

And most of them the Spanish favorite of split roundabouts (glorietas partidas), eventually at least

American engineers will design curb&gutter assemblies that could serve as border fortifications for premodern states but still get drainage issues. Curious!

On the other hand the aesthetic issues with concrete are mostly mitigable imo, this is poured in place (with particularly deep sawcuts I think) and looks nice + visually consistent utility boxes

The Westside cities bus network RFP has finally dropped, yesterday. As previously, goal is shovel-ready designs by late 2026 then it's up to the cities to actually implement them. cc @cohenhouse.bsky.social @lintonjoe.bsky.social

It looks like you could go up through the Leadville valley to get to Vail and beyond... then need to tunnel to get to Steamboat Springs on the W side of that range (red); to get to Saratoga WY (green) it's hard. Maybe you can just stay in the Platte valley instead, not sure where the E border lies
