23mins running uphill to celebrate October 23rd, International Snow Leopard Day. #23for23

Because conservation often feels like an uphill battle.

But I guess you never know when the crest will suddenly appear and you’re on the downhill…

*Seeing double*

Nope, these images are not the same, or even from the same image sequence! They were taken 23 days apart, with raging snow storms & high winds between them.

#Snowleopards are creatures of habit, regularly coming back to the same tiny patches of ground to see who's been around.

From last week spotting the turtle doves in the Knepp rewilding project, to having the same species at our garden pond here in Ronda, Spain!

Our friendly neighbourhood fox passes just under our bedroom window almost every night.

Taken with a @naturespy.bsky.social Ursus solar-powered ☀️ #cameratrap, which has been successfully powering itself across Dutch forests and Mongolia deserts recently. Goodbye battery changes! 👋

Sometimes R just beats you up for no reason.

I presented an update on PAWS, the Population Assessment of the World’s Snow Leopards. 6 of 12 snow leopard range countries have now concluded their national assessments! China has also completed surveys in all 8 snow leopard provinces and we await a national effort to collate these data.

Attending the 9th Global Snow Leopard & Ecosystem Protection Program (GSLEP) meeting in Issyk Kul, Kyrgyzstan this week. Ministers, representatives & partners from across all range countries met to discuss conservation progress & priorities, with the Tien Shan mountains as our backdrop! ⛰️🐆

View from the recent office! 🤩 Yes it’s a tired trope, but what a privilege to call this “work”!*

I had no connection in the field, but hope to share some news from the Gobi, Mongolia… watch this space.

*rest assured most of my time is spent firmly behind a desk/laptop!

And the nightshift! Pretty much since I started VOLECAM, there’s been an Apodemus mouse (species?) apparently cohabiting, appearing every few nights.

A fledgling blackbird making an appearance. Looks like godzilla in comparison to minuscule Vole
May 4, 2025 at 8:51 AM
Wren making a quick cameo. Might need to make a VOLECAM bird list.

Watch to the end to see the vole equivalent of a jaguar attacking a caiman.
May 3, 2025 at 3:43 PM
In other news, we’ve been having sporadic sightings over the last couple of weeks of a SHREW! Apparently co-habiting with Vole, sometimes seen minutes apart. No idea which species (answers on a postcard, please).

Will try to get some clearer video. Excuse the mud on the lens.

10 days later and Vole is still alive, despite the close shave with Weasel.

In today’s instalment: tfw you lose track of your mouldy acorn under the big pile of leaves outside your front door.
May 1, 2025 at 12:59 PM
…the sudden appearance yesterday evening of a WEASEL *inside Vole’s burrow*. Somehow Vole managed to avoid being weasel dinner. For now! Stay tuned.

Vole is still surviving the Spring, despite the recent weather challenges limiting foraging, some house cat sightings, and…

Absolute d*ck move from this blackbird this evening. Will have to pop down the shops for another miniature moss door mat now.
April 7, 2025 at 9:35 PM
Not sure what that food item was, but did NOT look tasty. Straight down into the burrow with it though 🙃
April 7, 2025 at 9:32 PM
Vole is still hanging in there. Got into a staring contest with the camera today. And won 👍
April 7, 2025 at 9:29 PM
Robin trying to steal more than the limelight - having a go at the vole’s handy doorstep food cache.
April 5, 2025 at 3:28 PM
Voley McVoleface was up bright and early this morning. Proceeded to have a tasty breakfast of mouldy seed husk.

If his diet continues to be this terrible, I may have to share my walnuts.

With everything that’s happening in the world, I’m just gonna leave this here…

VOLECAM.

@naturespy.bsky.social wifi #cameratrap (w/ +4 macro lens) set on a bank vole burrow in, well, a woodland bank (where else?). Bank vole is currently living its best life. We really don’t deserve Bank Vole.

In case you hadn’t heard: Conservation works! 📣

Meet the ‘takhi’ (Przewalksi’s horse), the last truly wild horses. The last individuals in the wild were seen in the Gobi desert in 1969. Only a coordinated captive breeding programme (from just 12 indivs) saved them from extinction.

Having spent much of my career to date in the tropics, where one does eventually get used to the “perma-sweat”, this is…unnerving. 🥶
