Animal loving introvert, totally addicted to Sarah Pinborough's books, Frasier and Cheers.
When not at work, I spend most of my time reading, listening to music, playing choice-based video games, and avoiding people at all costs. 😅
No, thank *you*!
This won't come as a surprise, but I truly loved it! ❤️
Now I go back to survival mode until your next masterpiece gets published...! 🙃

Freddie grows more and more irritated with his wife, convinced she is suffering from post-sepsis hallucinations. It doesn't stop Emily from trying to find out a bit more about her new home from her new friends and neighbors. Can she really trust them, though? What if they had secrets, too?

And she has been keeping a secret from him. One that could destroy their relationship. But... so does he.
Larkin Lodge was supposed to be a chance to start anew, but as unsettling occurrences begin to unravel, Emily becomes convinced that the house is haunted.

Emily and Freddie, the main characters, are both flawed. They love each other — or at least they used to — but they aren't sure they can trust each other anymore. She is recovering from a life-threatening accident. One he may or may not have caused.

I am an overthinker, and We Live Here Now sure gave me a lot of material to overthink! It's not one of those books you just put on a shelf after you are done reading, and forget. This story will stay with you. That I can guarantee.

I finished reading a few hours ago, and I’m still processing — thinking about the energies some places hold, about relationships, and about the parts of ourselves we choose to show, conceal, or even repress... Those different versions that make us who we really are...

I wouldn't categorize this book as horror (although it is quite creepy) but it is not an "ordinary" psychological thriller either (there is... more to it). Is it a ghost story? Let's just say it's a very original take on the haunted house trope! One I don't think I've ever come across before.

I find We Live Here Now quite tricky to review: there are many aspects I'd love to comment on, but it seems almost impossible to do without giving away any spoilers...

I did manage to put together two (well: four, actually 😇 📖) tiny pieces of the mystery, but I felt clever only for a short while, because I definitely did not see that ending coming!!

Usually I'm pretty good at figuring out the so-called "unguessable" plot twists... provided they were written by someone else. There is apparently no outsmarting Sarah Pinborough — and that's one of the reasons she is my all-time favorite author.

But there is no way to know for sure. The puzzle is blurry, shifting, and I don't even know if Marcus Kliewer provided all the pieces in the first place. And this is why I am unable to rate this book. Is this story brilliant or botched? I'd love to hear from those of you who have read it! 11/11

I think that too many things were left to the readers' own interpretation. If I were 100% sure EVERYTHING the author wrote, down to the smallest detail, was intentional, then I'd give more thought to some sentences that looked like hints, but that could also have no real meaning whatsoever... 10/11

It does bother me but, for some reason, not as much as usual. This may be because there weren’t any real contradictions in the storyline, and I may have missed a few pointers as well. I am also willing to view the open ending not as a flaw but as a way of making the story even more mysterious. 9/11

I really like weird/paranormal stories, but I also expect them to make total sense. I'm not a fan of loose ends. Real life is confusing enough as it is, so I need my five-star reads to bring me if not closure, then at least clear answers. I didn't get them. A lot of stuff remains unexplained. 8/11

Also, there were a lot of seemingly innocent yet important (I guess?) details and clues throughout the book, more or less hidden in plain sight. I definitely didn't manage to make sense of all of them, so I can't tell if they were pure genius or random, which is a bit frustrating. 7/11

However, the writing sometimes got on my nerves. I remember thinking I'd scream if I saw another sentence ending with "—but" or "until—". (On the other hand, those repetitions somehow added to the eerie, creepy feeling, so they must have been intentional... perhaps a good thing, after all!) 6/11

The author succeeded at creating a very oppressive atmosphere, that's for sure. He also gave me the creeps (literal goosebumps and shivers ran through my whole body while reading!), which doesn't happen that often. I was highly invested in the story and enjoyed gathering all the little clues. 5/11
