Our top takeaways from @iea.org’s latest #WorldEnergyOutlook:

⛰️Peak fossil fuel demand is coming, contrary to oil & gas producer narratives,
☀️Renewables are the fastest-growing source of energy,
💰Net zero is cheaper than fossil fuel dependence.

The Production Gap Report 2025, released today, shows fossil fuel expansion is still accelerating. Major producers such as COP30 host Brazil, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Canada, and the US are driving some of the world’s biggest increases, mostly to boost exports, even as global demand growth slows.
🚨The #ProductionGap is growing:
2023: +110% more fossil fuel production than needed to maintain the 1.5°C temperature goal
2025: +120%

By 2030, govts plan to produce 500% more coal, 31% more oil, & 92% more gas than 1.5°C pathways allow.

IEA: Oil still on track to peak by 2030; oil for fuel to peak in 2027

"annual growth slows…to just a trickle over the next several years, with a small decline expected in 2030, based on today’s policy settings and market trends"

📣New Report | Petrobras accounts for more than half of planned oil & gas expansion in Brazil, including some of the riskiest frontier projects.

Up to 85% of oil from its new projects isn’t economically viable in a 1.5°C world.

🇨🇦 oil & gas companies plan to spend more than $600bn expanding #fossilfuels over the next decade.

Gorgon is the world's largest #CCS project. It's attached to an LNG facility that was approved based on Chevron's promise to capture 80% of emissions

Not only has Gorgon never achieved that, it's performance has decreased year over year - capturing just 30% last year

Gorgon CCS underperformance hits new low in 2023-24
In the last financial year, the Gorgon CCS project captured only 30% of the CO2 it removed from its reservoir, its weakest performance to date. As a result of technical challenges and underperformance...

How much longer can we keep using the IPCC AR6 1.5°C scenarios (limited overshoot) for percentage reductions, net zero years, etc, given that we are currently not even remotely on track?

Starting today, the percentage reductions will be higher, net zero year earlier (all else equal).
