Oh yeah, this will be Fine! I'm sure Davis is offering Maxwell Something He Really Wants in exchange for participating in a totally reasonable experimental magical process with no devastating side effects whatsoever
Aaand Chapter 3 of THE WARDS WILL FALL is now up!

I think a lot of us have had a Theurgical Officer Davis in our lives at some point. Can Maxwell trust Davis? Hmm, remains to be seen.

A new chapter every Monday. Read (or listen) for free.

I used to use Notion before it enshittified, but now I use Obsidian to keep revisions and book information organized. It's a lot of work, but a detailed revision plan helps keep me from getting overwhelmed with edits.

The nice thing about making a revision plan and organizing big revisions into buckets (character specific, plot, worldbuilding, etc.) is it really gives me a great overview of the weaknesses in the manuscript and what my bigger structural edits need to look like

In a week, it will be the anniversary of my second book coming out, and my second anniversary as an author, so I'm going to count down the days by trying to convince you to read it, starting with the cover - designed by Lydia Blagden and art by Mia Carnevale.

A Very Tenebrous 2025.
The finest stories are being written in the cryptic, concealed corners that no one ever thinks to look into.

It's our mission to find them.

We can safely say we lived up to our promise this year:
NEW WEIRD HORROR + MORE🖤☠️

Important notes from this morning's revision outlining.

This has been a huge problem in the gov services space in the US too. Digital only is NOT accessible (and not just to older adults!). The further we restrict necessary programs to digital and shutter physical spaces, we create a tiered service hostile to actually providing those critical services.
"Essential services are now digital by default, leaving many older people feeling locked out of their own lives."

As more of our lives move online by default, digital ageism has quietly become one of the last unchallenged prejudices, writes Fiona Daly.

Opinion: We’ve grown far too comfortable excluding older people from the digital world

Working on Stormforks revisions some more this morning. Zenjil mentions one of my favorite characters in this book - a sentient astral diner named Burger Burger who is in desperate need of a union.

This book is a love letter to X-Files and Going Postal, can't wait to share more one day!

It was important to me to make THE WARDS WILL FALL more accessible (and hopefully a more fun experience), so every chapter includes audio narration!! It's also been a good reason for me to practice with narration :]

Okay, secret device? I'm so in! And I really can't thank you enough for making this available on audio too!

At events I always insist that I enjoy the daily act of writing, and I'm often met with skepticism. But an activity can be frustrating/challenging and still bring joy. In fact, that's part of it-- like playing a video game on a too-easy difficulty setting, a frictionless existence is not rewarding.
Sometimes I wonder if our many years of jokes about writers hating writing and doing anything but writing, etc, have convinced people that the writing part is the hurdle and the goal is just to have a thing in hand. But I am here to tell you: the writing is the best part. The act is the thing.

This is a very very good thread
There is a genre of advice that I refer to as "how to win the lottery advice." People who lucked out love to pretend that it wasn't luck, it was their intelligence and strategy, and that is something that can be replicated by doing this or that (and they're almost always selling a "course.")

I always say that hard work buys you a lotto ticket, but luck still draws it. Plenty of really talented people will never ever find success. There are things you can do to buy additional lotto tickets like making connections and showing up, but luck will always, always be a factor.

Some of the best advice I ever heard was from @silviamg.bsky.social who said that you shouldn't set goals that require other people to do what you want. You can write a book. That's a goal. You can't control whether anyone buys it. Other people have free will.
