Steven Universe is a great example. I loved that show. But as a fan it always blew my mind when people would act like the show was actually about modern day genocide, political activism, fascist dictators etc.

I’ve always assumed their appeal is for people who want to express their enjoyment of a piece of pop culture, but only in a kind of muted and inexpensive way.
