Finally getting started on converting the book back to something editable from the pdf I salvaged. Managed to get it back to a doc, but the style is so messed up I have to reconvert every chapter to manuscript format manually.

This is gonna take a while

An excerpt from a short story taken as a screen shot. The text reads: “In order to ensure our survival, to ensure that the colony might live to see a day when this is over, some will have to be left behind.” The effect of the words is hard to pin down. A slurry of outrage, grief, and worry crash through me, a cycle of internal burning and freezing—but worst of them all is acceptance. It ambles in after the rest, tying them in a bindle, tucking them away, muffling their cries. And I can hear it in the others too. There are no shouts, no crying, not even hushed whispers. Juil shifts uncomfortably, the males share a look—but the assembly is quiet, silenced by simple, solid truth: there is nothing else we can do.

On a related note if you need a new children's fantasy series for *whatever* reason, Deltora Quest and Rowan of Rin are two childhood favourites of mine.

Before, working on one story would have taken me six months. Now I've finished a short story and a flash fiction in less than half that time.

The one probably the most like me atm is the unnamed protag of "The Necessity of a Shepherd". Nervous, learning and try new things (though not nearly as dangerous), eager for a place to just 'be.'

One in particular ran from her shoulder down to the middle of her opposite thigh, and most of the slashes came in parallel pairs of two or three--sometimes four. I’m not sure what face I was making at the time, but Mure must’ve noticed something in my expression. Without prompting, she suddenly spoke. “There’s still time, you know. You won’t be able to get to town, but you can hide in the house with Sholto. They don’t care about anything that’s not in the shed; you’ll be safe there.” My eyes darted back the way I came. Only the top half of the sun remained visible, the sky growing darker every second. I could make it if I ran. Instead, I planted my feet in the dirt and tightened my grip on the spear. “No. I promised.”

The excerpt reads: But even after stowing the suitcase in the basement, Albert’s nerves are alive with anxiety, as if a spider is skittering across his heartstrings. He needs a distraction, and since the lamp on the counter is still lit, he grabs the novel usually meant to while away hours without customers, props his feet up, and begins to read. At least a few hours pass before he hears the noise. The curiosity shop is not large; it’s a single room with a lonely shelf in the middle that runs perpendicular to the counter. And on the other end of that shelf there’s a shuffling. Albert puts his feet down as quietly as he can and rises from his seat. But even raising the lamp as he steps around the counter isn’t enough for him to see what lurks near the opposite wall. He creeps across the old floorboards, careful to avoid those that creak, and the sound at least becomes clearer. It’s a sort of rummaging, a sound of picking things up and setting them aside. A sound made by those searching for something. Albert is not alone. And the intruder is hidden just by the edge of the shelf, less than a stride away. He swallows hard and rounds the corner.

Only instead of the other side of the fabric, the inside of the cloak seemed to be ... another room. Serenity blinked until her eyes adjusted to the sight. The cloak was acting like a window into another place, a separate, opulent looking room with polished floors and painted walls. Numerous pedestals were spaced around displaying what, as far as Serenity could tell, was just more garbage. Broken vinyl records, cellphones with cracked screens and more, showcased as if they were ancient and priceless artifacts. There were children here as well, just as tired and miserable as the ones among the trash heaps, dutifully polishing displays and cleaning floors. “Impressive, is it not?” asked Morgan.
