DYSPHORIA MUNDI, by Paul B. Preciado “This book attempts to describe the modalities of this dysphoric and revolutionary present. Not something that happened in a mythical past or that will happen in a messianic future, but something that is happening. Happening to us. Something in which we are actively involved. For this reason, this book intentionally brings together a series of texts that cannot be identified by their belonging to a specific genre. In the same way that the speaking body uses language to undo the presumption of a feminine or masculine gender political position, what is said and how it is expressed seeks to escape assignment to a literary genre. It is a dysphoric or, perhaps better, nonbinary book: it aims to eschew conventional distinctions between theory and practice, philosophy and literature, science and poetry, politics and art, anatomy and psychology, sociology and skin, the everyday and the extraordinary, the mundane and the incomprehensible, garbage and meaning. Among the elements that compose this book, there are diary entries, theoretical hypotheses, measurements of the microtremors caused by the movement of complex systems of knowledge, collections of a body's fluctuations of pain or pleasure, but also linguistic rituals, hymns, lyrics and letters whose recipients never asked me to write them. The first version was written as a mosaic of three languages (French, Spanish and English) which, far from having borders between them, mingle like the contaminated waters of a dying estuary. The book is, like the planet, in transition.”

Suppose that the intellectual's (or the writer's) historical func-tion, today, is to maintain and to emphasize the decomposition of bourgeois consciousness. Then the image must retain all its preci-sion; this means that we deliberately pretend to remain within this consciousness and that we will proceed to dismantle it, to weaken it, to break it down on the spot, as we would do with a lump of sugar by steeping it in water. Hence decomposition is here contrary to destruction: in order to destroy bourgeois consciousness we should have to absent ourselves from it, and such exteriority is possible only in a revolutionary situation: in China, today, class consciousness is in the process of destruction, not of decomposition; but elsewhere (here and now), to destroy would ultimately come to no more than reconstituting a site of speech whose one characteristic would be exteriority: exterior and motionless: in other words, dogmatic language. I adore this book. It’s about Erik Satie but also what it’s like to experience art and love it and be obsessed with it. About aesthetic judgments and eccentricity, lightness, humor. It’s anti productivity, pro reverie and dreaming. In the mode of Zambreno on Guibert, with a very different tone.

When you travel by bus, you still need a car to get you to a bed, a diner, a bar, to that part of town with a bookstore. Life in America without a car prevents you from fully taking part in education, work and leisure. It is not just a physical barrier, but a temporal one. Those who rely on public transport to get to school or work are at the mercy of shifting schedules, late drivers, the inability to change their route in the case of road works and construction, causing yet more division between the car-havers and those without.
