What an incredibly fun time in India for #ICP15! All of the chats I last week have given such a burst of inspiration and energy. Between that and the safari, caving, and the invited talk at IISc… I’m so lucky to do what I do, and to do it with all of you!

Now, back to work.

Here we go! #ICP15

I want to thank my awesome authorship team for helping me get this paper over the finish line—nearly all of whom are not on BlueSky (except @sindiarocks.bsky.social!).

I also couldn't have done this without the broader #CROCCA-2S team. I'm very lucky to be a part of such a big nerd family!

Okay… we all knew this was coming. On to Book 6 of The Expanse: Babylon’s Ashes by James S. A. Corey #BookSky 💙📚

I also did a quick re-read of Sam Harris’ pamphlet on Free Will yesterday evening. If you haven’t thought about whether we have agency over our actions, I would highly recommend this read. Determinism is very difficult to argue around. #BookSky 💙📚

Yesterday, I picked up Feel Good Productivity by Ali Abdaal. His book challenges the idea that suffering must precede success. No, *feeling good* about our work is what helps get things done. And we can cultivate our good feelings with the right mix of agency, curiosity, and inspiration. #BookSky 💙📚

Aaaaaaaaaand on to Book 5 of The Expanse: Nemesis Games #BookSky 📚💙

Not sure if we're counting books we read daily-ish, but I'll do it anyway. I'm casually re-reading Marcus Aurelius's Meditations. I first read the Hays translation in 2017 but lost my copy. The new Waterfield translation offers so much excellent context with its annotations. #BookSky 💙📚
July 11, 2025 at 6:00 PM
I'm also now *properly* stuck into The Expanse series by James S. A. Corey. I finished Abbadon's Gate a couple of weeks ago and am now nearly finished with Cibola Burn. Will likely pick up Nemesis Games this weekend...

Anyone who loves hard sci-fi thrillers will love these. #BookSky 💙📚

Last month, I flew to DC for a concert. In that time, I INHALED Babel: An Arcane History by @rfkuang.bsky.social. A fantastic dark academia-style novel where there's magic in the meaning lost when translating languages. It's also a powerful treatise on colonial exploitation. #BookSky 💙📚

I’ve been terrible at updating my thread!

I halted The Righteous Mind once I realized it built on ideas
@jonathanhaidt.bsky.social wrote about in The Happiness Hypothesis. So I’m reading that first. Ancient wisdom applied to modern life is a pet interest of mine (Daily Stoic, anyone?) #BookSky 📚💙

Celebrated 31 with the @carbon8.bsky.social lab yesterday. We even had Pedro DiNezio fly in just to photobomb 😅

Had a wonderful time last night. Thanks to the AZ state legislators, reps from Sen. Mark Kelly’s office, and the couple hundred residents who came out!

If anyone’s in the Phoenix area, come join me and the amazing folks at @momscleanairforce.org and @ucs.org to hear about the impacts climate change has on *your* community and how we can advocate for effective action. 🧪

I’m also returning to my reading series on democratic backsliding. I started with books on polarization, but have yet to read @jonathanhaidt.bsky.social’s The Righteous Mind. A classic on the topic. #BookSky 📚💙

Welp… I devoured Leviathan Wakes. Seems I might get stuck in this universe for a bit.

On to Book 2 of The Expanse: Caliban’s War by James S. A. Corey. #BookSky 📚💙
May 28, 2025 at 1:57 AM
I’ve also started Book 1 of The Expanse, Leviathan Wakes, by James Corey.

Never seen the show. Don’t know the plot. Started it on a random promise to a friend who loves it. 200 pages in and a do not regret it one bit. #BookSky 💙📚

If the last book mediates stress, this one might add to it. Now reading The Professor Is In by Karen Kelsky for advice on the academic job market.

This book has me to a T. I’m reeling from how accurately it calls out some of my qualities… and why they’re bad. Highly recommend. #BookSky 💙📚

While traveling last week, I tore through Dan Harris’s Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics. Been looking to restart my (mediocre) practice and liberate my brain from never-ending doom scrolling…

Take away: approaching mindfulness with compassion and curiosity will help you find calm #BookSky 💙📚

Back to Rutgers this week for my PhD hooding ceremony! It’s been wonderful to see old faces… ESPECIALLY my bad ass advisor, Liz, who’s been recovering from an aneurism last fall. No greater honor than to be hooded by her this afternoon ♥️🧪

Blessed to have seen many different corners of our planet. Let’s recommit ourselves to understanding, protecting, preserving it for future generations.

Wishing you all a Happy Earth Day 🌎

I refuse to be memory-holed by all that’s going on. So I’m currently tackling The Divider, @peterbakernyt.bsky.social and @sbg1.bsky.social’s definitive account of Trump 1.0.

Everything now was preluded then. And a silent resistance in the WH was the only thing b/w us and chaos.

Needed a mental break from the heavy topics I’ve been reading lately. So, I inhaled The Remains of the Day this weekend, my first Ishiguro novel.

Now I have to read all of them. Maybe Never Let Me Go sometime this year?

#BookSky 📚💙

Next, I’m diving into @stephenmarche.bsky.social’s The Next Civil War, a collection of speculative non-fiction essays on what might trigger domestic conflict.

No, I’m not nervous, why do you ask?
