Today’s sparkling species is 𝙋𝙮𝙧𝙤𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙖 𝙖𝙩𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙪𝙢, sometimes called a sea pickle.

This glowing gelatinous tube is actually a colony of tiny animals – zooids – joined together as a single colonial structure. Each zooid possesses two luminescent organs which rhythmically flash bright blue-green light.

Next in SOSA's #LivingLight series is 𝙃𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙤𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙥𝙪𝙨 𝙚𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙛𝙚𝙧.

This deep-sea shrimp lives in the #twilight zone of the ocean (200-1000m deep) and vomits bioluminescent light when it encounters predators. Scientists believe this tactic disorients predators and allows the shrimp time to escape!
