The Dragon is in My Ceiling

I’m naked when I see a dragon in my bathroom ceiling.
Its giant face looms as I reach for a towel. Like a featherless eagle. Yellow eyes and a curved beak paired with the gaudiest gold scales I’ve ever seen.
All I can think is: Dungeons & Dragons was right.
The dragon lifts a claw.
Energy buzzes on my skin. Magic. Spellcasting. Fuck.
A second gold dragon slams into the first. Head down, neck locked, a train ramming through a luckless car. The dragons vanish.
On my bed, my cat looks smug.
I gotta stop going to seances.

Anna is very fun (though some question exactly how fun) and slightly less likely to turn buildings into fleshy monsters that eat their inhabitants on a whim than her compatriots

Anyway, here she is freaking out random strangers she met five seconds ago on the subway by knowing too much about them.

“Hey.”
I start. The female in the sweatshirt has a high voice, but it belongs to an older woman. Some lady in her thirties.
The blonde dude freezes.
“Why are you getting off?” The woman in the rabbit hoodie asks. “This isn’t your stop.”
Shit.
“I’ll, uh,” the blonde dude backs up, “take the next one.”
“There won’t be another for a while.” Oh God, her voice is so nice. She sounds like the run of the mill, middle class white lady. Not the ‘let me speak to your manager’ kind, the nice, naive, well-meaning sheltered ones who always offer smiles and a cookie. “You should ride this train to the end.”
What if there’s no train running when the time comes for me to go home? What if I get eaten by whatever they’re here for? Brandt swears up and down there’s monsters in the sewers and in the subway tunnels, and that’s why nobody except idiots take the light rail these days.
“Whatever.” The woman in the rabbit hoodie flaps her hand. “Go. Die.”
Blondie looks ready to choke.

The train lurches into a curve.
The cabin goes dark.
Oh God.
The woman in the rabbit hoodie is staring at me. Gone is the average human face. Now she’s a bipedal cat creature dressed in human clothes. Her face is round, covered in fur, soft and pettable, the color of cold moonlight. Her mouth is monstrous, a wide slash like a Cheshire Cat, black and full of pointed needle teeth. Her large eyes are yellow with slit pupils. A bushy, pinecone shaped tail, a fox’s tail, not a cat’s, switches behind her. A pair of round ears with sharp pointed tips top her head. Long, furry white fingers with curved black talons slide free from her pockets—definitely fingers and not paws. Head tilted, she taps a square black nose on the end of her flat, blunted muzzle.
My eyes drop to my phone. The fuck. No way I saw that. No fucking way.
I look up.
The woman in the rabbit hoodie is human. Dull brown hair falls loosely to frame her round, pale, painfully average human face. Plain brown eyes meet mine and a slow smile spreads across her thin lips. I’d call it an amused smile, but it feels darker. Like she’s looking past the curtain of my eyes to someplace deep. She’s found me out. She knows what I just saw. She fucking knows. And nobody else is freaking out. Nobody else saw the Monster Cat.

Stuffing my phone into my pocket, I grab my backpack. Is she still looking? Sit still. What did Handsome Guy call her? Don’t move. Why is my heart hammering? Oh God, she better not still be staring at me. I’m used to rude people staring, aren’t I? Stay still. No, no, I know how to shrug this off. I’ll just ignore her. Pretend she isn’t here.
“This is your stop, isn’t it?”
She’s to my left, sitting in the seat across the aisle from me. Her elbow planted on the back of the other seat, fist against her cheek, studying me with super normal brown eyes.
I swallow. “What?”
“You seem a little lost in thought.” The woman in the rabbit hoodie smiles at me. “You’re a barista at the Starbucks on 5th and Pike, right? It’s a long walk back from the UDub campus.” The crinkle around her eyes suggests she is supremely amused by my terror. “There won’t be any trains running south for a while. Don’t miss your exit.”
She knows where I work.
Oh God.

“Mmm, I did get a little carried away.” Garrett crouched, one hand extended toward her swelling bruises. “Christ, you’re a mess. For a second there, I forgot you’re human.”
She punched his smug, stupid face.
Off-balance, Garrett landed squarely on his ass. Index finger pressed to his nose, staunching flowing blood. Magic suffused the break, reinforcing, correcting. “Point taken.”

“Are you submitting a resume?” Katie asked.
“Don’t want you thinking I’m just a pretty face.” Garrett paused. “Though, I am remarkably handsome. All the girls and boys tell me I should model.”
Katie gave him a long look.
His blue eyes gleamed.
Her brow arched.
“Do you know the difference between ego and confidence?”
Katie’s hands tucked behind her back. “Honestly, I don’t care.”
“Oh.” Garrett rubbed his chest. “Ouch.”

I'm a lover of the kitchen sink, I like to throw everything into the pot when I'm writing. I love writing fantasy, SF, and romance. When I'm not reading ir writing, I'm exploring video games and tv and loving on my old lady cats. (Shhh. They don't know they're old.)
