There is a memory in the back of his processor, summer birds crossing the dry hot of the plateau, the scent of kicked dirt after the sweltering heatwave, the kids coming to base with wrapped ice cream. One of them bit into a frozen bar of cream white and orange peel. Optimus would never know the taste of vanilla extract or orange concentrate, but he found other ways to feel sweet. Whispering, 'careful, dreamsicle' to his medic, and being pushed away by the palm with a rehearsed scoff. For all their strife and displacement, frustration and terrible danger, it was rare for Optimus to feel so belonged. Ratchet worked his magic to heal not only his dents, but the countless wounds lining his soul. Sometimes, as someone does when they get used to bleeding, he gave into the foolish urge to pick at the stitches - something he found restraint in when he fell for Ratchet entirely. On one of the quietest days of the ark, as he watched the doctor wordlessly fill in the cracks of a self-inflicted gash on his helm, he swore to never do that again. ㅤ Just as Optimus Prime promised to himself that he'd do whatever he could to give that bleeding spark a break, and the absolution that they were doing everything they could to not only stop the hurting, but make something better for the people they were responsible for. They found each other in being chronic givers. The only way they'd take care of themselves was to turn their love inward, lest they both burn out for good.
