i got a bit nerd-sniped by this... wrote up some results. the basic idea is to start with a taylor expansion at p_x, and solve for the cubic terms of A and B. then use vertex form to deal with the monotonicity constraints

Not sure if there's an easy way to fix this, but I do think it is fixable. One could use an infinitely repeating animation to linearly scan for the tape head, for example.

I'll try to implement a solution over the next couple of weeks, unless someone beats me to it.

Looked at the source and I don't think their implementation works. The tape is moved left and right by separate finite animations, so the simulation breaks if the tape moves left and right a large number of times (e.g., in an infinite loop).
