Years ago at a hostel here in New York, I met a young Black Frenchman who didn’t speak English, and I didn’t speak French. However, we both knew a little bit of Spanish and tried to converse in that language (and were moderately successful in doing so). That’s one of my fonder memories from my 20s.
So many Americans get panicky when they meet someone who doesn’t speak English and it’s a language they can’t understand.
Man, all is not lost just because you don’t speak the same language. Hand motions, smiles, and tone. In other parts of the world it’s no big deal. It’s normal.
