Ah, I forgot the sanshin is often played with a finger pick instead of the larger bachi used for shamisen. The rounder sides and shape of the face could also make it look like the shape seen in that picture.

I'm also curious what song he was working on here... the instrument he's holding looks like a shamisen, but he doesn't have a bachi, and the shamisen are usually square/rounded square, where this has distinctly obtuse angles.
