This is a really sick story.

From everything I know, Boston’s Logan Airport is a legitimately dangerous place to travel through.

“It’s insane to have them rip our family apart.” Federal agents are arresting the foreign spouses of Americans during interviews at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services offices. The couples and their lawyers said they had followed the required steps to secure permanent residency.

Agents are arresting foreign-born spouses when they report for the final step to obtain permanent residency, and charging them with visa violations that could result in deportation.

i'm convinced if we ever tried to touch the rail of meat politics in America (something that's going to eventually need to happen in order to reduce CO2 emissions), it would lead to a huge right-wing shock
remembering the time a random catholic priest got mad at me about a hypothetical about the government restricting meat production on the other site

meat politics is going to be insane for the next Dem administration which takes climate change seriously, imo

This is way closer than I’d like it to be but Charlotte appears set to unlock an absolutely massive infrastructure plan with the 1% sales tax increase with billions for public transit and roads up by just shy of 8k votes with almost all precincts in.

On Friday, I'm talking with a transit expert about the authority governors have to shift the final year of Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill funding away from highways, to EVs, transit, & pedestrians. Many governors do not know they have this authority! And this year is a crucial window!

Questions?
States Have More Power Than They Think to Fund Sustainable Transportation
States have the authority to fund trains, buses, bike lanes, and sidewalks with money that would otherwise be used to build more highways.

Had lunch today from a solar-powered food truck, and it was really remarkable how much more pleasant it was to wait for my food without the constant loud rumble of a generator.

Also the drunken noodle was quite tasty!

Wow, with a tied 3-3 vote the Philadelphia zoning board DENIED the special exception required to operate this comedy club, despite the support of the local neighborhood association.

Painful to watch a small business dream maybe die over a zoom meeting.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro chides Zohran Mamdani for not condemning other people’s antisemitism:

“He left open far too much space for extremists to either use his words or for him to not condemn the words of extremists that said some blatantly antisemitic things.”
Shapiro rebukes Mamdani for failing to condemn ‘blatantly antisemitic’ extremists
The Pennsylvania governor told JI: ‘When supporters of yours say things that are blatantly antisemitic, you can't leave room for that to just sit there’

My contribution to this discourse as an urban historian is there is ample precedent for transit agencies being hamstrung by politicization of unusually low fares. The nickel subway fare was a political third rail forever. I wrote about it with MARTA’s ten cent bus fare in the ‘70s.
the MTA has a huge equity issue - the subway doesn't go everywhere - and free buses are one way to address that. transit nerd urbanists tend to skip the equity issue entirely and will tell you to increase bus service on high density routes - for efficiency

I'm scared of what this new, emboldened ICE could look like
I don’t think anyone is prepared for what they just did w/ ICE.

This is not a simple budget increase. It is an explosion - making ICE bigger than the FBI, US Bureau of Prisons, DEA,& others combined.

It is setting up to make what’s happening now look like child’s play. And people are disappearing.

With this vote, Congress makes ICE the highest-funded federal law enforcement agency in history, with more money per year at its disposal over the next four years than the budgets of the FBI, DEA, ATF, US Marshals, and Bureau of Prisons combined.

We knew CHOP's proposed parking garage was bad for Grays Ferry.

But we didn't know exactly how bad, or why CHOP assured everyone it wouldn't worsen traffic.

Now through PA's Right-to-Know Law, 5th Square analyzed the traffic study and found numerous red flags. Read below:

CHOP Garage's Transportation Impact Study Is Fatally Flawed
Learn why CHOP's proposed 1000-space employee-only parking garage at 30th and Grays Ferry will worsen traffic, increase pollution, and put Grays Ferry residents in danger.

Another example of how Democrats are failing to meet the challenges of younger voters - young people are worried about housing costs but older Dems are still catering to incumbent homeowners. No wonder Dems are failing to win over young people!
Gov. Lamont says he will *veto* HB 5002, the broad housing bill proponents say would boost affordable housing in the state.

He says he hopes to see an amended version in a special session this fall.

“Veto to me means we can do a lot better.”

Immigration is good!
kind of just endlessly sad and grieving that there are so few voices in the public sphere making the basic principled argument that immigration is an affirmative good in every way and the best way for this country to serve humanity is to welcome people who want or need to leave their homes

This is horribly cruel
Infuriating on every level:

• Deadly road design (a 7-yo should be able to walk 2 blocks and get groceries!)
• Cultural norms that demonize allowing kids to be at all independent
• Jailing the parents, which above all else is staggeringly cruel to the 10-year-old who just *watched his brother die*
Parents are charged after their son, 7, is struck dead in a car accident
Gastonia, N.C., police charged the parents with involuntary manslaughter charges after allowing the victim and his brother to walk home alone from a nearby grocery store.
