Cutleaf coneflower (Rudbeckia laciniata) is waking up. Grown from seed last year, I am hoping to have some blooms this year!

Plant a serviceberry. You’ll get early spring flowers for pollinators, berries for birds, and beautiful fall color—all in one tree. 🌳🌸🌺

Golden Alexanders (Zizia aurea) are beautiful spring bloomers in the native food forest. Flowers attract numerous pollinators & can be cooked like broccoli. Will re-bloom if cut. Butterfly host plant. Drought tolerant! Stays green well into winter.

We have been busy winter sowing our perennials for next year! We start them in a greenhouse to reduce chances of unwanted seeds and birds eating the seeds, which means we have to periodically shovel snow in to keep the soil moist.

I used to hate grasses and did not understand why people included them in gardens, but over the last year, various native sedges and grasses have really caught my attention. I believe this is Carex lurida and it showed up in an area we stopped mowing. The seed heads are very interesting!

One of my favourite native plant additions to our garden last year was New England aster. We grew a few dozen from seed, adding a dozen to our own yard and selling most of the remaining pots. Surprisingly, they all flowered and were visited by bees!

Beginner-friendly Mid-Atlantic native plants 🌱 series #9: native holly, Ilex sp.

Someone told you to plant boxwoods. They're ecological statues, as good as dead air to pollinators and birds. Or you have Euonymus, Nandina, or barberry to replace 😬

Plant an inkberry or winterberry holly instead.
Inkberry Holly
Inkberry holly (Ilex glabra) is an evergreen shrub, native to the Coastal Plain region of Maryland.
