Watching the heart grow – in real time!

600–800 children are born with congenital heart disease each year in Switzerland. Instead of mice, Marco Osterwalder’s team at the University of Bern uses heart #organoids and AI to study heart development.

Humans produce many chemicals, which are released into the environment. To ensure they’re safe, over 3 million fish are used annually for testing. A team at Eawag is working to replace these tests with new approach methods (NAMs) – with great success.

How the law regulates animal experiments – and how it could be improved. Animals are treated contradictorily: They may be used extensively (e.g. in experiments) but should be protected from “unnecessary” harm. Margot Michel’s group at UZH examines this.

You wonder what mice, going to the grocery store, and condensed milk have to do with animal welfare? 🍼 🐁

In animal experiments, substances are often administered to animals orally, usually via a feeding tube that is inserted into the stomach, which can cause stress and injury.
