There is a strong emphasis on the sociology of knowledge. Every concept is a condensation of collective labor, a product of centuries of social history. Every mode of production has generated characteristic modes of thought. Marxists have traced this through the evolution of the social division of labor in which intellectuals became possible, but became increasingly one-sided, atomized, and impoverished, as mental and manual labor became increasingly disconnected, and as the class freed to pursue knowledge became ever more remote from the class that produced the material basis of their existence. Class societies divided all of humanity’s vital activities, fixed them in different sections of the population and could not achieve an integral overview. Even within thought itself, various aspects split ever further apart into subdisciplines of subdisciplines oriented to knowing more and more about less and less, while never interrogating the epistemological presuppositions structuring their inquiries.

Funnily enough, I just tonight started Eric Holt-Giménez’s “The Foodie’s Guide to Capitalism” which right out of the gate touched on the mystification of capitalism, particularly in the USA.
But there are also larger political and ideological reasons why the food movement does not know much about capitalism. For the most part, capitalism is simply not discussed in capitalist countries—not even in university economics courses where political-economic structures are assumed to be immutable and are rarely questioned. Until the global financial crash in 2008, it was socially awkward to mention the term capitalism in the United States. This is because even perfunctory examination of capitalism immediately… …uncovers profound economic and political disparities, thus contradicting the commonly held notion that we live in a classless, democratic society. Those privileged enough to go to college usually need to wait until graduate school before delving into the foundational works of Ricardo, Smith, Mill, Marx, Polanyi, Keynes, and other notable scholars of our economic system. Even then, capitalism is often treated as an intellectual artifact to be studied in academic isolation rather than the dynamic social and economic system of wealth and power that constantly influences, shapes, and reshapes life around the globe.

Passage from Alec Karakarsanis’s book Copaganda: How Police and the Media Manipulate Our News What many people don't know is that internal documents, public statements, and industry materials reveal that police officials and for-profit manufacturers of body cameras and related software had been clamoring for the technology for years. However, prior to Michael Brown's murder, police and prosecutors had been unable to get local governments to spend the billions of dollars needed to outfit every cop with a mobile surveillance camera that the cops themselves control and that prosecutors would use almost exclusively against marginalized people accused of minor crimes. Several large companies—who were eyeing body cameras as a multibillion-dollar industry—had unsuccessfully lobbied for years for government funding to help police procure the money needed to integrate body-camera data into cloud-based computing systems and artificial intelligence algorithms that operationalize facial and voice-recognition. In the absence of government funding, they had even turned to the vast world of private police foundations, raising millions in donations from people like Stephen Spielberg to privately fund body cameras because police wanted them so badly. After police shot Michael Brown in 2014, the cops, prosecutors, and companies seized their opportunity, taking advantage of public outrage and a willing news media to convince local government officials to pay for the most expensive expansion of police surveillance technology in modern historv. Thev reframed cameras as a "reform" to control police violence, almost always excluding from media coverage the views of experts, social movement leaders, and directly affected people who were warning that the technology, in the hands of the police and prosecutors, would not only fail to stop police violence, but usher in a new era of state surveillance and big data-fueled repression.

The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), gathered at its 19' Mid-Term Ministerial Conference, in Kampala, Republic of Uganda, on 15-16 October 2025, expressed their serious concern over the ongoing developments in the Caribbean region. 2. The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) recalled the Communiqué issued by the Coordinating Bureau on 19 September 2025 and regretted that, since then, the situation on the ground has only escalated, including as a result of the deployment of additional extra-regional military forces and assets, coupled with further hostile actions, intimidatory threats and even more aggressive rhetoric. 3.
