I don't think Mamdani had anything to gain from it. Trump will lie to anyone's face and that's what he did, the MAGA crowds still hate Mamdani (they think) and it won't be easier to work with Trump administration anyways.It let Trump had a photo op though and went better than zelensky,so win for him
