she gave so many signs, so many signs, so many signs. and you didn’t even READ the signs.

and i don’t think it’s a coincidence that the TIME POY interview starts and ends with talking about taylor’s storytelling abilities. she’s been telling a story for a long time to anyone who is willing to not only listen, but to read. readers make the world go round🩷

the theme of reading her work has become more and more prevalent, as she seems to be drawing more attention to it. obviously there’s dear reader, an entire song dedicated to not the listeners of her songs, but the *readers*—an important distinction she has repeatedly emphasized
November 9, 2024 at 8:05 AM
she’s also made it very clear that the most important thing to her is that fans read her music. not just listen—READ—bc you will always pick up more details and nuance by putting eyes on the words on the page. this is VERY important to her.
November 9, 2024 at 8:05 AM
like any good writer, she has been a reader for even longer than she’s been writing, and she has always emphasized the importance of reading to her fans, and encouraged them to read more on their own time.

she tells us over and over that storytelling is complex and different every time, that inspiration comes in flashes and characters and fairytales are her favorite vehicles to use to tell us stories. the realest part is always the emotion she imbues into these stories
November 9, 2024 at 8:05 AM
and this is obviously a legacy she is proud of and one which she takes effort to maintain. she categorizes her songs as fitting into one of three styles of writing. she details her creative writing process. she writes poems and portrays herself as an author in different mediums.
November 9, 2024 at 8:05 AM
her legacy today is largely carried by her prowess as a storyteller, and she is regularly acknowledged by critics and other artists/scholars as the literary talent of a generation—poet, philosopher, bard. someone whose words are worthy of poring over and studying

taylor has always seen herself first and foremost not as a singer, but as a writer. and she has repeatedly made as much clear to the public. before she even became a songwriter, she had written a whole novel by age 14.

gaylor this, hetlor this: no. the real divide in the taylor swift fandom is and has always been between those of her fans that *read* her lyrics, and those of her fans who…don’t.
November 9, 2024 at 8:05 AM
so my conclusion rn is that debut will either come first or debutation is real. bc she’s going to ghost before her reputation burns everything down & 👻 is before rep. leaning toward debutation tho bc “ill tell you something bout my good name, it’s mine alone to DISGRACE” 🤔

but ultimately i have a kink for morally gray lesbians who are also fucking geniuses so i fear that i will be following along unless she does something genuinely heinous. and also, supernovas actually dim before they explode
November 9, 2024 at 7:46 AM
but no, taylor swift will not save us. if she did this, it will change things though. it will. and that’s something, and i think that if we’re viewing morality in a binary way (which we shouldn’t) that would make her more net good than bad.

i understand why many of you feel otherwise. i do hope that what she’s trying to do is destroy that propaganda machine by dealing a self inflicted and fatal blow. her old brand will crumble and the illusions will shatter. the ripple effect has the potential to be world altering
November 9, 2024 at 7:46 AM
i think the point of this and the scope of it is so far beyond this election, i really am not sure that an endorsement is part of the plan. this is about attacking the systems of lies, lies, lies, pr and propaganda, and the 🔵 is just as much a part of that as the 🔴
November 9, 2024 at 7:46 AM
controversial & shitty things shes said and done and people she’s spoken to. i’m not convinced that she could materially alter the course of politics in this country with an endorsement, so maybe we don’t agree there. but i think this is about opening her fans’ eyes to her ethics
November 9, 2024 at 7:46 AM
unfortunately that seems to involve shattering the illusions that every kind of her fans has about her. in unethical ways. again, if you’re around at this point, you have to acknowledge the woman IS unethical a lot. i genuinely don’t think this is worse than a multitude of other

i don’t think her motivation was ever primarily the money, but i do think she didn’t care enough to stop those around her from turning her brand into a money sucking cultish monstrosity. but she created it, and now i think she wants to destroy it & only she can
November 9, 2024 at 7:46 AM
& obviously she wants to continue making music, that seems to clearly be deeply important to her. i think she will continue putting out art for those who want to stick around, and her audience will be different, but she won’t ever become irrelevant i don’t think. she is a legend
November 9, 2024 at 7:46 AM
but i also think she knows that she doesn’t need more money and that her legacy is permanent no matter what. something provocative and controversial like doing performance art to expose the ugly underbelly of the industry would only further cement her legacy
November 9, 2024 at 7:46 AM
but at the heart of that, in her art, is a level of chilling and crystal clear self-reflection and haunting regret, and unmistakable humanity. and a desperation to cling on to that humanity. i do think it still matters more to her than her piles of money, maybe it makes me naive
