After fantasizing about the fictional version of him in the 1931 film, Diana meets the real-life Dracula, and he has a...proposal.
I blinked at him, initially confused, until I remembered Dad’s souvenir. “The dragon candelabra?” He nodded. “It holds—” He paused and tilted his chin upward, searching for the right word or, more specifically, the right translation. “Sentimental value,” he said finally. “You can have it back!” I rushed, but he lifted a gnarled finger to silence me. “I have come…to collect payment.” I stiffened. “What do you want from me?” “From your father,” he corrected. A glint in his eye hinted there was something he wasn't telling me. I shook my head, fearing the worst. Please don't let Dad be dead, I thought. He continued, “I gave him a choice. In exchange…for taking…something precious…of mine. I shall claim…something precious…of his.” He held out his hands, imitating balances on a scale. “His life…or his daughter.” His smile returned, and in the second it took for me to blink and hold my breath, he was again inches from my face, his voice gruff. “He chose you.” “You’re lying!”
