More a jazz and easy listening Liberal than a classical Liberal. Cricket (Northants fan), literature, economics, politics & anything that takes my fancy.
Ah yes. I remember when some journalists talked about Dan "Dan "the man" Hannan" Hannan as if he was an intellectual who had thought about stuff rather than a beribboned buffoon and slavering ideologue.

When I read the comments below the local newspaper reporting on some crime, it’s all ‘throw away the key’ ‘bring back hanging’. There’s no recognition that most get let out at some point, and you’re releasing even more damaged people who are even bigger criminals.

Knowing what a shambles Northamptonshire dibble was in, after 3 useless PFCCs and a deranged chief, it would take some time. Mind, he applied for the job and must have had a fair idea what needed fixing.

I feel a bit sorry for Ivan Balhatchet, who had an absolute plateful to deal with when he took over from Chief Constable Walter Mitty. I’ve met him, he’s a decent cove and I’d suspect he’s not entirely responsible here.

Yeah, just because he dressed like I did at that age to get served in pubs didn’t mean he was old enough to be leered at without consequences.

This story is hilarious but there's also a telling point: people mistook a 15 year old for the lead detective in an important crime. Why? Because he's dressed as an adult, which most adults don't bother to do any longer.

Fascinating. I was unaware of the 'Penrose effect', (more aware of the Penrose process, having had a background in physics).

I have spotted this: pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC... but what else should I be reading about it?
The Penrose Effect and its acceleration by the war on drugs: a crisis of untranslated neuroscience and untreated addiction and mental illness
In 1939, British psychiatrist Lionel Penrose described an inverse relationship between mental health treatment infrastructure and criminal incarcerations. This relationship, later termed the ‘Penrose Effect’, has proven remarkably predictive of ...

Very reasonable response to the situation.
