The “this is why I don’t buy ebooks!” crowd is missing the point in huge way and I wish people would think for a second about the structures and incentives that allowed Amazon and Clarivate to make these decisions.

Book pre-orders are an indication of reader interest in a title. They demonstrate to publishers and booksellers that working with the author and stocking their books is a wise choice. So, if you love an author's work, consider pre-ordering and/or asking your local library to shelve the book.

In case you think tropes are fake: I just got a note from a friend who was checking into a hotel and the people in front of her was pissed because they specifically booked a room with queen beds and the hotel only has rooms with one king bed available.
