Good question -- I don't know! The publishers would be the ones to decide whether to implement DRM software or not. Like, Tor tends to offer DRM-free titles, so you should be able to download any of those directly, even from Bookshop. They should really create a special category for that!

There will be some books available to download now, and I believe the plan is to add Kobo support and/or launch their own e-reader. (I'm voting for the former.) Regardless, it's a big win for small business if even a handful of folks switch from Kindle! 🥳

Amazon's software is proprietary, so you would never be able to read on a Kindle device without the ebook provider contracting with them (ie. OverDrive/Libby). For other e-readers, it will be at the discretion of the publisher, so Bookshop would have no say in it either way.
