This is good.
Whatever the ultimate merits of those competing approaches, this showdown shows again that Congressional Democrats have chosen their principal battlefield against Trump-and that it is not preserving democracy. That means only Americans themselves can do that, by locking arms - across partisan, economic, and geographic lines - to defend fundamental democratic principles and condemn abuses of power. Whether such a broad-based movement coalesces will determine what American democracy looks like at the end of Trump's term far more than the choices Congressional Democrats make, as this shutdown will surely demonstrate.

This is exactly right. I have friends in the Democratic donor and campaign space who express real unease with aggressive demonstrations of opposition, with taking action to back up words of concern. That’s the losing path. What Josh says is what I’ve been telling them.
Relevant text is: They not only have to use that power for whatever they can get with it, they need to show there is an opposition out there willing to fight the imposition of a presidential autocracy. If they're not, who else will have the courage or inclination to take any risks and fight? An opposition requires morale to remain in the fight and endure while its opponents are holding most of the power.

This is exactly right and it’s what many of us have been urging since Jan 20…of 2021.
power. But I noticed that in some of those comments there's an idea or a hope that Democrats will or can conquer Trumpism. This is a flawed goal. It's one MAGA currently has about Blue State America. You're simply not going to conquer or destroy one side of the country. You're not going to hit a point where that other side suddenly realizes they're categorically wrong. What you need i for Blue State America to use political power as ruthlessly and as maximally as Red State America does. And one has to hope this will lead to an understanding that neither side is going to conquer the other, and neither side will want to live under that absence of rules when it's not in power. That's the basis of the emergence of new rules of the road that everyone feels they can live under regardless of who is in power. That is a realistic goal. There are certainly many darker ways this can play out.
