Nature lover, amateur photographer and generally interested in the natural world around us. Left leaning, but no longer rusted on. Currently enjoying the fruits & vegetables of my labour.

Staunch supporter of kindness
This densely populated thicket of blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon) caught my eye and reminded me of a painting by Jackson Pollock titled "Blue Poles".

I like the abstract nature of the image.

I was out in the Grampians last week and noticed a distinct lack of lizards and snakes due to the cold change. All it took was one warm afternoon and they magically appeared from everywhere!

This shingleback lizard really wasn't cold, he was almost zippy

Gordon & Douglas persuaded me to take them for a walk along the river - I'm so glad that they did.

One little duck went out one day
Over the hill and far away
Mother duck said, "Quack, quack, quack, quack"
...

Spotted this little chap all on his own in the forest. I'll give him credit, he could paddle pretty quickly. I hope he beats the odds.

Freeloaders making the most of springtime green grasses

For those outside Australia, it is pronounced "Eem-you", not ee-moo.

Aboriginal language is spoken, not written, so it's irrelevant how it is written down, it's all about how it is pronounced.

Bushfire? What bushfire?
The grass trees (Xanthorrhoea) close to where the bushfire started, seem to have not only survived, but really thrived in the 6 months since.

Absolutely wonderful to see an entire forest of grass trees.

Bushfire recovery 6 months later. While the fire decimated the undergrowth, many of the old stringybark trees survived and are beginning to start epicormic growth.

In January 2025 Australia was burning.
A year ago, I camped in the Little Desert in search of spring wildflowers and orchids. Sadly, I'm unlikely to see this desert bloom again in my lifetime. 95,000 hectares of desert burnt.

The primary flight feathers on birds are called pinions. Crows have 9 pinions, while ravens have 10. So, the difference between a crow and a raven is simply a matter of a pinion.

While out bushwalking I spotted several echidnas all within about 1km of track. While not an echidna "train", I suspect one had or was about to occur. I've not seen so many in close proximity before.
