Kazuya Nuri’s art is some of my favourite, i love the way he uses colour to aid the effectiveness of his composition. I think he’s a really great artist to study from if you want to learn how to make your pieces more interesting. An example below, and my thoughts on its composition in alt text ⬇️:

Here are some colour and value related composition ideas I found interesting:
I always like to squint until things are blurry to get the general idea of colour based composition.
A colour gradient exists in a circular motion in the background of the art to aid the path of the viewers eyes around the picture in a fashion already implied by the movement within the piece (i.e the blowing wind at the bottom kickstarting the viewing path, the direction and position of the characters creating a frame around the main subject).
Nuri uses colour and value to fluidly divide the piece into two in 2 dimensions; spacial, and foreground-background:
- Warm and cool tones spacially separate the background characters in line with the path of Ryunosuke’s body, further centering him as the main subject. It’s almost as if it’s saying his stance alone is so powerful that he’s able to divide the piece into 2, reinforcing the visual idea that he’s dependable and resilient.
- Strategic value usage gives the piece its “blossoming” foreground effect: the background characters in the middle fade into the back, while the characters in line with the main characters are much more saturated (though not as much as Ryu, splitting the focus and giving him the main spotlight). Susato is just as saturated as Ryunosuke, but her colours are of that of characters nearby in the background, causing her to blend in and creating a smooth bridge from foreground to background for the eye to travel through.
There’s a lot more I could say, but I’ll leave it here. I always find myself second guessing after jotting down what I see, so I don’t know for sure if some of these were in fact Nuri’s intention.
