Yes, the northern lights are pretty amazing. Can now confidently say this app has done at least one very good thing for me by timely alerting me to such a cool event; otherwise I would have totally missed it through work and bedtime.

Weird that we have a planet-wide magnetic defense system that self activates when the sun decides to attack but it is very pretty

There is nothing I dread about fall and winter as much as the great family tradition of stomach bug round robin

Parks and Rec isn't a hill to die on, but one thing it gets right is this whole government thing rests on the shoulders of people you will never know, caring a lot about jobs you've never heard of, fighting challenges thrown at them from every angle just to make life a little better for everyone.

The US has a massive advantage at non-yield producing testing methods in technology and expertise, so of course this would be another unforced giveaway to Moscow and Beijing.

If nothing else I find it obscene to turn governmental agencies that are meant to function as institutions in service of the entire American political community into overtly partisan propaganda mouthpieces.

It’s just such a visceral degeneration of civic life it drives me insane.

Certiorari "before judgment" is how #SCOTUS takes up a full appeal *before* the intermediate federal courts have heard it.

It used to be exceedingly rare. For instance, there wasn't a *single* grant of such expedited review b/w August 2004 & February 2019.

This is the *23rd* such grant since then.
#BREAKING: Over dissents from Justices Sotomayor, Kagan & Jackson, #SCOTUS grants a stay in the Slaughter case (allowing President Trump to remove the last Dem member of the FTC), *and* grants certiorari "before judgment" to decide whether to formally overrule its 1935 ruling in Humphrey's Executor.

You “regret” mistakes. This was not a mistake. They deliberately shackled these people and distributed video of them being humiliated. They detained them for days after.

What they regret is that, this time, their gleeful anti-immigrant violence wrought negative consequences for the administration.

The movies don't really get into it, but it's worth remembering that Denethor went crazy because he spent too much time doomscrolling on the Palantír and it cooked his brain

LinkedIn is good for its narrow purpose of connecting with professionals and finding people that though your network you can talk to about work in a new job or industry, but as a social media site…many of the posts and posters are just insane
all this time litigating blueskyism meanwhile linkedinism is rapidly accelerating into infinite power mode

There's being like George III as in all the Declaration of Independence grievances about tyranny, and then there's being like George III as in yelling at a tree because you think it's the King of Prussia. He's as much the latter as the former.

Now while it’d be great to have parties actually stand up and perform this function to coalesce on a decent or acceptable candidate (and tbf the Dems have done it several times!), primary elections seem like the ideal place for ranked choice to structurally provide this, especially for president
And while the ultimate responsibility lies with voters, since most voters are (somewhat sensibly!) unplugged from the nitty gritty day to day of politics, that will require political parties to reassert their role as gatekeepers who punish their own bad actors who engage in bad behavior

Making kakistocracy great again and again 🙁
EJ Antoni has never worked in statistics collection. He is 5 years out of his PhD. He's only ever written one economics paper. His explicit, only qualifications are that he works in ultra-conservative think tanks & believes Trump's conspiracies about the BLS. Grim stuff.
Donald Trump named EJ Antoni, chief economist of the conservative Heritage Foundation, to lead the Bureau of Labor Statistics

I’m nowhere near the first to say this but the Trump era highlights how bald faced lying needs to be socially punished. While corruption, illegality, violence, cruelty all merit their own pushback, lying is uniquely corrosive to the way we relate to each other in society
