I am in the midst of a two+ week trip to Crete, basically a second home. Europe likes to claim this island as its birthplace but it is very much its own place. Likely Mediterraneans have more in common with each other than with any non-Mediterranean country.

I came across a silent demonstration in one of the Emory libraries today: students studying with signs taped to their tables. The students — clearly stressed out but brave — preferred not to have their faces photographed, so here’s a detail.

220 days after being arrested, still facing charges, it never stops being weird to show up to work where the president of the university would just as soon see me in jail.

I am grateful for my family, amazing colleagues and students, music coursing through my house, new friends, my black lab Rudie, this new community, all the ideas brimming to be written, and my sublime woodland garden. Happy day.
