So anyway my ballroom, I’m sure you understand, requires the choicest plot in town, a first-class patch of land. This town is full of real estate that doesn’t turn a buck. House of this, Department that? Come on, who really gives a fuck? What luck they have that I can see, beyond their gripes and posturing, the benefits of pleasing me. I am a selfless president. I give so much just being myself, I should actually charge rent.

Human intelligence is just embellishing mimicry of human intelligence. Instead of denying/being disgusted that machines are increasingly good at such mimicry, we should disabuse ourselves of our self-aggrandizing view of our own minds and feel at peace with what we are good at, which is synthesis.

The majority’s contention that I reject “ ‘pure textualism’ [a]s insuf ficiently pliable to secure the result [I] seek,” ante, at 10, stems from an unfortunate misunderstanding of the judicial role. Our interpretative task is not to seek our own desired results (whatever they may be). And, indeed, it is precisely because of this solemn duty that, in my view, it is imperative that we interpret statutes consistent with all relevant indicia of what Congress wanted, as best we can ascertain its intent. A method ology that includes consideration of Congress’s aims does exactly that— and no more. By contrast, pure textualism’s refusal to try to understand the text of a statute in the larger context of what Congress sought to achieve turns the interpretive task into a potent weapon for advancing judicial policy preferences. By “finding” answers in ambiguous text, and not bothering to consider whether those answers align with other sources of statutory meaning, pure textualists can easily disguise their own pref erences as “textual” inevitabilities. So, really, far from being “insuffi ciently pliable,” I think pure textualism is incessantly malleable—that’s its primary problem—and, indeed, it is certainly somehow always flexi ble enough to secure the majority’s desired outcome.

It's called politics, but it's really just a bunch of assholes slandering people to rationalize their own rapacious greed and willingness to push others into tragedy to obtain surplus luxuries for themselves.

US democracy was a machinery of progress despite its injustices at home and abroad because the power contract was an (albeit grudging) exchange of rights for political legitimacy. Trump has broken the machine by abandoning the pursuit of legitimacy.

The bottom line is that tariffs wouldn’t help ordinary people even if they functioned according to Trump’s delusional fantasies because the thing that screwed people in the first place wasn’t globalization but the insatiable greed of the people who will be in charge after the tariffs as well.
