Do read Sunday Crunch for @masonboyowen.bsky.social's top analysis of Tory conference and my summary of the Green Party's ambition to enhance its comms strategy.

Rachel Millward told me she hadn't been given media training: “That’s mad. That's actually crazy.”

On Bournemouth beach where Green members are marking (and sitting on) a red line in the sand over the situation in the Middle East.

Good morning from Bournemouth where the weather has *slightly* improved on yesterday’s overcast, windswept conditions. Awaiting Co-Deputy Leaders Mothin Ali and Rachel Millward’s speeches in the main hall which is packed out …

Until next time, Liverpool.

Flag waving and applauding aplenty inside the hall for Keir Starmer’s speech. Volume (and length) of standing ovations and whooping can make it tricky to hear his remarks. Audience inside the hall (selective, obvs) very positive - but the audience outside the hall matters most.

The POLITICO Europe pub is here in Liverpool. Pat McFadden currently speaking to Dan Bloom before Jack Blanchard talks about covering U.S. politics from the heart of Washington, D.C. - some pub photos snapped before events kicked off!

Listened to ‘Here Comes the Sun’ last night to prepare for my first ever Labour conference and first time visiting Liverpool (yes, really). The weather, at time of typing, appears to have listened. What a pleasant city.

Helping with morning Playbook this week after reminiscing about packing my bags and moving to Warwick as a bright-eyed 18-year-old undergrad exactly six years ago today. Recall freshers’ week (& Labour conference) being *slightly* torpedoed by Brenda Hale’s Supreme Court ruling.

As a beach ball of a bald JD Vance bounced around the crowd attending the anti-Trump rally on a muddy Parliament Square, Jeremy Corbyn said “well done” to the four people arrested after images of Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein were projected onto the side of Windsor Castle.

The House of Lords spent nearly seven hours debating Labour MP Kim Leadbeater’s assisted dying bill for the first time.

Do start your weekend reading my analysis in @politico.eu’s Playbook PM. Like the Commons, opinions were, of course, very divided.

London looking especially fresh, crisp and bright on this autumn day as I celebrate exactly three years living in this remarkable city. Marking the special occasion … by going to a Reform UK press conference about council pension funds. More details in this arvo’s Playbook PM.

It wouldn’t be a trip to York without a visit to Betty’s … featuring some intensive tea pouring concentration, the minster’s renovation and, of course, the city walls.

Visited Harrogate, Knaresborough & York and only purchased four books: Ben Elton’s ‘This Other Eden’, @helenlewis.bsky.social’s ‘The Genius Myth,’ @johnofarrell.bsky.social‘s ‘May Contain Nuts’ & a 2011 Private Eye A-Z. Just finished @claremackwrites.bsky.social’s peerless ‘Other People’s Houses.’

Marked 24 journeys around the sun by visiting Wicken Fen, a superb National Trust spot outside Cambridge. A vast landscape provided perfect escapism from bustling city life. The immensely picturesque views showed just how flat East Anglia can be. Scones were obviously consumed.

Has found boat trips on the Thames are the perfect way to admire the capital’s bridges and sunsets.

Labour MP (and whip) Christian Wakeford says 16-year-olds can "get married with consent" despite the Marriage and Civil Partnership (Minimum Age) Act 2022 banning this and raising the age of marriage to 18.

Angela Rayner's Times op-ed originally said "by law, they [16-year-olds] can get married" despite the Marriage and Civil Partnership (Minimum Age) Act 2022 raising the age of marriage to 18. This was edited out in an updated version (with no correction).

Nothing like baking banana bread, er, out of lockdown. Two loaves attempted: one with plain flour & extra baking powder, the other with self-raising flour as recommended. Two eggs, two bananas, 140g caster sugar, 140g (softened) butter - all supremely edible.

As ‘28 Years Later’ hits cinemas, I was inspired to finally watch ‘28 Days Later’, er, 23 years later. Vividly recall the eye-catching (!) poster and 18 rating from my youth - haunting, disturbing, visually arresting. Top job from Cillian Murphy but Naomie Harris steals the show.

NEW: Labour MP Kanishka Narayan will oppose the assisted dying bill after backing the legislation last November.

The Vale of Glamorgan MP told me the proposed law could “result in an intolerably high ‘false positive’ rate of those coerced or misinformed into death.”

Marvellous seeing ‘The Gang of Three’ at the King’s Head Theatre just before its run ends. Splendid cast of three painting a compelling portrait of Machiavellian tendencies from each big beast on their ruthless, restless struggle for power. Great, very simple set design to boot.

Excellent to devour this book during a week away and find time for fiction. A wonderfully crafted tale by @johnofarrell.bsky.social - erudite dialogue, colourful cast of characters, full of humour and energy. ‘Family Politics’ is about far more than politics … and indeed family.
