A group of Seattle’s retired Latvians met recently to hear Zaiga Alksnis Phillips tell how she and I met and how I came to write my historical novel, STILL THE CARETAKER: A LATVIAN GIRL’S JOURNEY which is, in part, based on her memories.

Earnest post, but: a thing I like here is it’s okay to have moments of happiness in public without being broadly scolded, and I believe that sustaining this kind of humanity will be very important as we resist fascism.

We have to sustain each other. Making joy isn’t denial, it’s how we will survive

If you're into podcasts, I just discovered 'What Now? with Trevor Noah' & highly recommend it. The episode with Tressie McMillan Cottom from the day after the election was depressing but illuminating. Can't wait to go back through the episode library.

Historical fiction set in Latvia 1939-1944. Based on memories of a Latvian-American woman who, as a young girl, struggled to keep alive her dream of studying to become a veterinarian while living through a year of brutal Russian occupation, WWII, and the Nazi’s. Amazon and Goodreads 5-star ratings.

Okay, writer friends... Who else has been struggling to focus lately? Today, let's set a timer for 20 minutes to write something on the work in progress. It can be anything - next scene, later scene, description, character sketch, bit of dialogue. Doesn't have to be good - it just has to be a start.
