This is interesting and both literal and metaphoric. Some chronic conditions can heighten immunological responses, creating hives or digestive symptoms out of line w/ predicted side effects, or paradoxically. And chronic symptoms can literally and emotionally limit tolerance for new problems.
Thinking a lot lately about the threshold of tolerance for side effects and how it varies from person to person, but people expressing distress are sometimes met with disapproval or skepticism if it defies narratives. Makes these kinds of conversations very difficult to have, and is very isolating.

I’m so sorry Tom. I went through a similar nightmare in 2022 after getting Covid. Six months of heart failure meds and drinking 2 liters of salt water a day to try to treat POTS. Physical therapy that included, uh, holding on to the kitchen sink and bending two inches into a squat.

In this bracing essay, @charliejane.bsky.social reminds us that San Francisco has been cruel to the unhoused for decades, with policies that are absurd and abusive. That's why it's so ironic that right wingers make it seem as if this city welcomes the poor. No. That has never been true.
My latest newsletter is about the attempts to evict Bluestockings, and the new laws that require maximum cruelty towards unhoused people.

And I talk about why we want to judge unhoused people for their behavior, and how it's part of our American disease.
