It can express complex emotions and social issues with both visuals and text. It influences fashion, art, cinema, and even international culture. Thus, in 1985, in The Hong Kong Cop, Jackie Chan can be seen dressing up as Arale, the main character in the manga Dr. Slump.

There are manga about business, cooking, romance, history, and even philosophy. Because of this diversity, manga has become a respected cultural form. Adults reading manga in public is completely normal, and artists are recognised for their work.

But popularity does not mean lack of depth. Pop culture can be emotional, political, and creative. The problem is not the content but the prejudice against what young people enjoy. Japan’s attitude toward manga is very different. In Japan, manga is not only for children, but for people of all ages.

Manga and comics have often been dismissed by Western cultural critics because they are traditionally linked to “children’s culture.” For a long time, anything visual or illustrated was seen as less serious than literature, theatre, or cinema.

It also showed me that love, even when it cannot last, can still change who we are and how we see the world.

In the end, Your Name Engraved Herein is not just a love story, it is also a story about memory, regret, and growing up. It taught me to value honesty in relationships and to understand how powerful social pressure can be.

Even if people can speak freely, it can still be hard to live authentically if social norms don’t change.
This lesson connects to my own life because I live in a more open society today. I can talk about love and identity without the same fear.

The film reminded me to look at the world with empathy and to appreciate how personal stories can open our minds to realities different from our own.
It also made me think about how society shapes our idea of love and normality.

The director, a gay man, told a story based on his own first love, and that made it feel authentic and emotional. Even if I don’t share his exact experience, I could still connect with the feelings of loss, fear, and tenderness.

Still, I could feel their emotions deeply, because the film made their experience universal, everyone knows what it feels like to want something they cannot have. Watching it through my own gaze, I realized how important representation is.

My own positionality influenced how I understood this story. I grew up in a different time and place, where LGBTQ+ people have more visibility and acceptance. Because of that, I could not fully imagine how hard it must have been for the characters to live their love in secret.

This film taught me a lesson about the pain of hiding one’s identity and the courage it takes to love honestly. It showed how social and political pressures can stop people from being true to themselves. I learned that love can be both beautiful and tragic when it is not accepted by society.
