NEW: ALA salutes Dr Carla Hayden for her exceptional service to the nation as the Librarian of Congress. We are deeply disappointed in Dr Hayden's abrupt & unjust dismissal last night, an insult to the scope & breadth of her work.

Fwiw one thing university faculty can do is provide simple explainers for their students on how federal funding works and how cuts to higher ed & endowment taxes will concretely damage their education and possibly spike tuition costs

Many students don’t know how university finances work!

The coolest thing I’ve seen today is that a bunch of volunteer public health professionals and developers have restored the CDC website from before January 20th 2025.

This differs from an archive in that they want to rebuild the links between pages and replicate the full website.

One must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Sometimes we must interfere. -Elie Wiesel

Please, please use scheduled send 🙏🏾

For junior folks and/or those unable to work during this time, etc, *receiving* emails from those in power upon return to work is so much better than seeing that the same emails were sent *whilst* you were off…
With the approaching the start of the holidays please remember that HOW to ‘switch off’ is your thing. There’s no manual. Whatever suits you. Checking emails is not a crime during this time but it’s good practice -if you email back- to schedule sending for when the holiday is over.

Regulating tech companies alone won't make safer digital spaces. you need parallel investment in addressing offline behaviors that migrate online. Bullying doesn't start on Insta. Predators don't originate on Roblox. Safety requires societal change+corp compliance.

The law sets a minimum age for users of platforms like TikTok, Instagram and X. How the restriction will be enforced online remains an open question.
