More good news on the critical front: The New Yorker’s new theater critic will be the wonderful @emilynussbaum.bsky.social, who distinguished herself mightily as its TV critic for years and will surely do so again in this new post

I know that my little newsletter about what cool shows are happening this week in town isn't even coming close to the kind of output mentioned in this thread, but it is writing that lands in people's inboxes for free almost every week.

this might be helpful in illustrating the difference between looking at buying subscriptions as “buying content” vs. seeing it as “investing in writers” or even “building new media orgs to last”
Running any media organization is expensive, especially when we pay freelancers industry-standard rates. We were running at a loss until our subscription drive in October, and we're looking at around $33,000 in expenses for 2025.

That is before we pay ourselves.

Goooooooooooaalllllll!! (But hey, don't let that stop you.)
Headed into the final 27 hours of a campaign honoring Anthony Braxton's 80th birthday, the Tri-Centric Foundation is less than $500 away from its goal. The foundation is doing vital work… if you're inclined to help out (or meant to do it but forgot), now's the time. fundrazr.com/braxton80fun...

Just $150 short of goal with 16 hours remaining. Let’s go, Friendly Experiencers!!
The organization I proudly served for more than a decade, and still have strong ties to, part of the support system for the improvising music ecosystem of today. They are close to reaching their goal. Pick up some of their limited edition merch today before the end of their fundraiser. #music

This commercial for French's Mustard from 1987 is equal parts charming and also kinda unsettling, but what strikes me is the work that went into the absolutely delightful puppetry and practical effects for a *mustard commercial*!! Imagine that today??

He had me at 'Red Headed Stranger' but really there is nothing about this that is not divine.
Look forward to touring with the incredible Clarice Jensen next year! Covering lots of ground, doing solo sets as well as a new collab called Hand on the Bay, in which we render 16 bars of Willie's Red Headed Stranger over a longform graphic score! Tix in bio.

Following this poetry thread avidly, partly to educate myself and partly just to push aside the endless firehose of horror that otherwise constitutes the majority of my feed.
I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each.

I do not think that they will sing to me.

Just between us? It’s possible to have a lot of objectively good things happening around you and still feel a little lost and lonely and afraid.

You know. In case anyone wondered.

Guitarist/bassist George Draguns sent me a link to this new album by his current group with Storm & Stress bandmate Kevin Shea and saxophonist Ayumi Ishito. I had to buy it instantly; forwarded the link to a friend and same thing happened. Go on, try it! secularfusionism.bandcamp.com/album/secula...
