Since it's a big weekend for consumerism, I just want to put out there that buying an indie author's book in any format is "shopping small" no matter where you choose to buy it from.

Incidentally, theft like this is why there won’t be a second Steelflower trilogy, why the Bannon & Clare series was canceled by the publisher, and why I will never do another collected SquirrelTerror book.
I did a thread a few weeks ago of "authors link your stuff" & one of my author friends who is one emergency away from being homeless had a massive spike in downloads on Anna's Archive from people *who follow me* complaining about how they are poor & should be allowed to steal from other poor people

If you like an author's work, the best thing you can do is buy it. The second best thing you can do is ask your local library to buy it. Or, do both!
A reminder that the median book deal for a debut author in the UK is £7000, paid over 12-18 months. (from 2022 Society of Authors report). Some of your favourite writers are struggling. societyofauthors.org/2022/12/06/a....

I think it’s pretty clear at this point that one of the main impacts of LLMs is to disrupt thinking: to make it so that far too many people never properly learn how to do it, and then to control the output so there are thoughts that people never learn how to think.

I think it's imperative to have strongly held beliefs about things, but it is just as important to hear new to you information and change those beliefs if the facts change.

We have to be able to learn and grow.
It is absolutely okay to say

“Here is my opinion with the information I have available and I will change it if that information changes … in fact it is now critical”

re: pirating of books. I hate Amazon too. And $$ is beyond tight for many (including me). But I will NOT take money from those helping me make it thru this hellscape. Don't steal from authors Use libraries.
If you illegally download, I hope all your food orders are wrong for the rest of your life.

No, I'm not going to read this click-bait article. Because men should figure out WHY they're in trouble (and sort themselves out) before having bigger families - which isn't even mentioning the huge amount of demand this put on the mother (and often children) of these bigger families

I pretty much ignore illegal downloading because there is nothing I can do about it, and erotic books get pirated at rates that would break your brain.

But I hope people who make collections and sell the data for profit step on Legos with every step for the rest of their lives.
They also sell everything to companies building LLMs, there's a link offering their "datasets" (books, papers, etc) for tens of thousands of dollars USD. They also auto-scrape everything scanned and uploaded to Internet Archive's Open Library. So. Yeah. 🙃

Acquaint yourself with the major antisemitic conspiracy theories.

Don't automatically discount it when left Jews tell you that you've done a dogwhistle, even if you didn't intend it.

These are trencherous waters.

Oppose genocide, *and.*

Do not do the Nazis' work for them.

Israel is engaged in genocide, it is a genocide materially assisted by the US, and AIPAC is the biggest lobby pushing for that material assistance to continue.

AND.

We need to proactively address anyone trying to exploit these realities and justified anger to advance or engage antisemitism.

every author in the class action, please file the claim.
AI advocates have warned that if every author in the class action filed a claim, it would "financially ruin" the entire industry.

Everyone deserves food, healthcare, housing and an education.

They shouldn’t have to “prove they matter” to access basic support.

They shouldn’t be forced to justify their “worth” to have a chance at survival.

This shouldn’t be up for debate.

We have enough to help everyone.

Contracts are my day job - & have been for 20 years - please DO NOT let AI summarize any contract you are about to sign. The DETAILS matter. Read every word of any contract you are about to sign. Make sure you (or someone with your best interests at heart) understands your contract before you sign.
I just received a contract on Docusign for review and signing, and it offered to give me an AI-generated summary that I could read instead to save time.

That's AN AI-GENERATED SUMMARY ***OF A CONTRACT***, in case you need to let that sink in.

"They're not supposed to do that to ME" is not a position worthy of respect.

"They should never do that to ANYONE" is.
