But we don't think there is divine intercession. More variable environments are more likely to produce extraordinary, positive outcomes. The SHG can capitalize on these illusory correlations and a ritual can start.

Our paper on functionalist explanations with @acastroaraujo.bsky.social is out!
I am immensely proud & grateful to have been part of this project! It has really changed how I think about the explanations I make and the evidence necessary to back them up!

Paper with @tkeskinturk.bsky.social out! Culture is often described as a landscape. We build these landscapes and examine movements across them. People move to popular positions, but this implies different overall patterns based on the ruggedness of the terrain

Our paper on how the networks of different species react to removals of their members has been accepted! Removals hit hardest when they target key conduits & sources of innovation. What/where these are, however, depends on the species! Massive collaboration; hugely proud of it! tinyurl.com/5a3m5jfs

Won't be in ASA because I am doing fieldwork in the Peruvian altiplano, but I am in the job market this year! I use different approaches-like formal models, field experiments, and panel data-to study cultural change, both at the individual and group level. If you hear of anything cool, let me know!

Culture is often described as a "landscape."
@tkeskinturk.bsky.social and I build these rugged landscapes and examine how people move across them.
They seem to move towards the "peaks", but this has different implications depending on the initial structuring of the space!

We often hear that people's identities form a network, but this is seldom measured. W/ Maria C.Ramos, we develop an instrument to get at these intrapersonal identity nets. Their topographies are associated with well-being outcomes in expected ways:

Hi!
New preprint with Steve Vaisey! We look at mechanisms that might be driving social change across 8 different countries: osf.io/preprints/so...
We find that cohort-replacement is good at explaining change in "sensitive" issues - i.e. issues that are hard to talk about change more privately.
