In these dark times, Japan's mascot culture remains something that will always bring a smile.

A smiling egg. With a pink bow.
Tamaki, a smiling egg with a pink bow, is a mascot for the Hotel Grantia Hanyu Spa Resort.

You mean apart from during Talisman Sabre and basically every other multilateral exercise we do?

Russia playbook: stroke Trump's vanity, give him a tiny thing that he announces like the 2nd coming and get everything you want. Trump is an international policy rube.
They’re going to play him like a fiddle.

New piece from me @goodauth.bsky.social on why Riyadh talks were very bad, why Rubio's appt was doomed from the start, and why U.S. diplomacy is in crisis (hint: giving away the store is not diplomacy). To paraphrase @dandrezner.bsky.social, I wrote sharper today. goodauthority.org/news/why-hig...
U.S. diplomacy is in crisis.
U.S. diplomacy in Europe and Marco Rubio's bilateral talks with Russia aren't really about ending the war in Ukraine, or a lasting peace.

Govt spending and immigration big drivers of economic growth in US. These steps will be costly.

Trump has chucked Ukraine, rhetorically, under the bus. If you're in Seoul, worry. He'll say you had it coming from North Korea. Philippines, ditto. No alliance guarantee can be counted on under this president.

There used to be a time when @slate.bsky.social magazine would run a story on how US media would report on events in the US if it were another country. We need that again

In the current geopolitical environment can't see how anyone can complain about anyone else getting all they can to defend thmselves.
They’re still doing this, I see. The Philippines is a sovereign state. Beijing does not have a veto over what arms it has.
At Chatham House: 'I'm a student from the LSE...'

'I think you probably need to tell us about your other affiliation.'

'My other affiliation is a Chinese diplomat, with a special focus on ASEAN issues.'

He then goes on to hammer the Philippines' FM about why they're keeping US missiles.

Trying to work out what's most disconcerting about Trump 2.0. I think it's the lying. Not new for him, but the range, scale, depth and consequences of lying is astonishing. Cabinet nominees flagrantly lied in confirmation. WH spox regularly lies about major issues, Vance's Munich speech etc.
