Bonkers body horror about vanity, fame, and the ways in which woman aren’t allowed to age gracefully.  Amazing performances from Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley and (mostly) great special effects but the ending fell flat for me and the running time is unnecessarily long.
The Substance (2024)
A fading celebrity decides to use a black market drug, a cell-replicating substance that temporarily creates a younger, better version of herself.

Heartbreaking doc about disappointment and regret. It suffers a bit from a lack of diversity in voices. White people (mostly of privilege) aren’t the only people that struggle or fail to achieve their hopes and dreams. Still worth a watch (it’s streaming on Criterion currently).
Flipside (2023)
Chris Wilcha helped adapt This American Life to television. His new documentary embodies the spirit of that show as he tries to save a New Jersey record store, in this comic yet deeply moving reflecti...

RFK Jr. is a fraud and a danger to public health. Pointing out his addiction history is unnecessary and harmful to those in recovery and those seeking it. Just because someone abused drugs in the past doesn't mean they can't have opinions and/or contribute to society. He just happens to be a fool.

Simon McCorry and I have a new album coming out on @pastinside.bsky.social later this month. You can preview two of the songs and preorder digital and CD copies via the link below. It's probably the most hopeful sounding music I've made up until this point.

Just spent 5 days in Costa Rica. Beautiful country. They run on 98% renewable energy sources and abolished their military in 1948 and invested the funds in primary education. 🤔

Hilarious and tragic take down of the 1930s French Bourgeoisie. I didn’t expect to like this as much as I did but it was layered and surprisingly bold (especially for a film that was released in 1939). It became clearer as the movie went on why it caused such an uproar upon release.
The Rules of the Game (1939)
A weekend at a marquis’ country château lays bare some ugly truths about a group of haut bourgeois acquaintances.

Fascinating, slow burn character study that is equal parts comforting and unnerving. It’s very human in that it’s full of longing and contradictions (connection/disconnection, control/no control, etc). The running time is long but it’s purposeful and allows you to feel closer to the protagonist.

This is my second Resnais film after Hiroshima Mon Amour. Tragic, disorienting, and beautifully shot. The fragmented editing might be off putting for some but it is largely effective in portraying the impact that trauma (particularly war and grief) has on memory. Still need to see Marienbad.
Muriel, or the Time of Return (1963)
In the seaside town of Boulogne, no one seems to be able to cope with their past, least of all Hélène, an antique furniture saleswoman, her stepson Bernard, and her former lover Alphonse.
