Hi there! I want to show you a cool feature on SorghumBase.org, a permanently-funded genomic and genetic database for people who work in the globally important crop sorghum.

You can search for gene models that have germplasm with disruptive SNPs and quickly order them from seed repositories. 🧵
I ran across another nice attacking chess puzzle today. Really highlights the tandem lesson of an under-defended king and the coordination of a pawn storm supported by pieces.

White missed better defensive moves and now black to move and be crushing.
Am I the only one who thinks Sir Professor sounds better than Professor Sir?
Another fun chess puzzle I ran across tonight. This seems like an endgame blunder that I would make in time trouble; a fun little maneuver for black to be winning.

Few people outside North Carolina have heard of Paul Newby, the chief justice of the state’s Supreme Court.

But Newby has had a huge impact on America and his state. He’s done this with the goal of delivering what he’s called “biblical justice, equal justice, for all.”

Found this old post from the @uwmadison.bsky.social Genetics Department. I honestly think my interview session with Barry Ganetzky got me their grad program. I really enjoyed my time and experiences with Barry, whom I hope is enjoying his retirement in a warm, sunny place.
This whole saga is tragic. What makes it especially malicious were Kramnik's baseless, continued accusations. Any action by FIDE needs to be meaningful. I hope that special prize in Naroditsky's honor is substantial and reflects his positive impact on the chess community.
Chess body investigating ex-world champion who accused Daniel Naroditsky of cheating
U.S. chess grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky died this week at age 29. Former world champion Vladimir Kramnik had accused Naroditsky, among others, of cheating in the sport.

Having a bit more free time to play chess lately. Had a nice King's Indian game with black.

White played this tactical mistake. Black to move and be winning.

Text from my mom:

"I could come visit you both. Homicide 12-oh."

Luckily, I knew this to mean she was watching a police procedural while using voice-to-text.

May start sending cryptic business messages this way.
I thought Brit-ish means she's just a little bit.
I am so angry with myself right now. That is good.

How has this pun never occurred to me?
The (re)learning of chess openings continues. Revisiting some of my old blitz games to brush up on practical lines when playing the Sicilian. I was delighted when I found this one from last year. Never thought I would land this type of checkmate in actual play!

One of our sorghum plants in September during early grain filling. This particular plant had an interesting feature: a puckering on the sides of the grain. Haven't really noticed this type of extreme unevenness before. Could be normal or impacted by an environmental stressor. Regardless, neat!

You've been at a job long enough to know a decent colleague to chat with.

The more you get to know them, the more they share. What's fact or fiction? You don't know, but you listen.

Then there's one story that's so over the top—a bona fide lie. But then, a photo appears.
Me asking what I hope is a smart-sounding question during seminar.
Another chess training game to brush up on my openings and middlegame strategy. White to move and have the advantage. Try to find black's best defense.

Bonus points if you can guess the opening.
Those look great! What is the filling?
Largest sorghum producing state!
They are quite distantly related, actually. Sorghum is a monocot, while amaranths are dicots. We have a lot of weedy amaranths in our fields, though.
Sorghum really is a beautiful plant. Grain color and nutrient content are controlled by diverse gene networks.
