NOSFERATU is Robert Eggers’ weakest film to date yet made with such meticulous craftsmanship that I still had a good time. Whenever it lacks the emotional depth or complexity, NOSFERATU makes up for with its grotesque style, gorgeous production design and strong performances. Haunting final shot!

NOSFERATU is Robert Eggers’ weakest film to date yet made with such meticulous craftsmanship that I still had a good time. Whenever it lacks the emotional depth or complexity, NOSFERATU makes up for with its grotesque style, gorgeous production design and strong performances. Haunting final shot!

STILL WAKES THE DEEP is a frustrating mixed bag. As much as I love its bleak, Lovecraftian atmosphere, detailed environments and inherent Scottishness, it collapses under the weight of uninspired gameplay mechanics and its strictly linear structure. A bit too short to justify the current price, imo!

HARD TRUTHS is Mike Leigh’s best film in recent memory. A subtle tragedy disguised as an achingly funny comedy, realistic in its portrayal of depression, with Marianne Jean-Baptiste delivering her finest performance to date. If she doesn’t get an Oscar nomination, there is no God.

A sprawling, demanding epic on Jewish identity, architecture and the illusion of the American Dream, made more captivating by Brady Corbet’s stunning direction, Lol Crawley’s 70mm cinematography and Adrien Brody + Felicity Jones’s performances. Wow.

David Cronenberg’s #TheShrouds is a bizarre, talkative meditation on how grief is processed through the merge of death and technology, only to (intentionally messily) unravel through paranoia and conspiracy. Bound to be hated and rejected by many, but I, for one, loved this. Cronenberg’s masterwork.
