When I rang the new supplier to cancel, I received a further counter offer for an additional cashback if I proceeded with the switch. First they offered an additional €50, and increased that to €100 when I was on the fence.

There are good savings to be had if they think you are about to move.

If economists are at fault, it may be on being too focussed on the first best and now being seen as out of touch by not considering seemingly obvious political economy constraints

Thanks for sharing! My take - first best policies like carbon pricing are first-best before political economy constraints are considered. Now that these are binding, we need to adjust. Perhaps behavioural interventions can help, or perhaps we need to focus on second best subsidies, etc.
