Excellent book and some fascinating insights. Think the title is slightly misleading though 🤷🏻‍♂️

Bought this in the Netherlands on a bit of a whim, as it intrigued me and was rather beautiful.
It’s an astonishing book. Engrossing, charming, sad and extremely moving. Can’t believe I hadn’t already heard about it. Instantly become one of my favourite books.

I must admit I was unaware of the events on 7th April 1779 when James Hackman shot Martha Ray. A quite sensational murder that gripped society at the time and has continued to fascinate people through the centuries. This book recalls the event and focuses on that fascination.

What an excellent book this is.
The land battle in Normandy is so well documented, but I knew almost nothing of the Navy's experiences before, during and immediately after the landings.

I rarely run on the beach, but it was just too tempting yesterday. Easing myself back after injury, so lovely way to do it

Excellent book. Real insight into how the various surrenders played-out and the background to them. Pity I finished it on a day when World War lll feels imminent 😢

Fascinating - if slightly too long - book. So many significant events during this period and interesting to reflect on how lifestyles began to change during this time.
