We are eternally grateful to each other and the community for keeping this going.

But the need has never been greater. We continue to work with our partners across the community and third sector to target the money where it is needed, but to remain effective, we need a consistent income stream.

The quote at the beginning is from Satyam, Versha and Sameer. They are now contributing to the fund having previously received from it. Their feedback is echoed across recipients, some of whom have been displaced, have no recourse to public funds, or are just unable to save for unexpected expenses.

Personally, we have had founding members move away, get married, have babies and new members join. We’ve been tired, been defrauded, and have discussed whether we have the strength to keep going.

Fundamentally we decided we must we know the fund is a available at a point where people need it most.

When we started during a global pandemic we did not imagine that things could get worse. But in the last five years the ongoing cost of living crisis, global wars and genocide, a deepening climate crisis and the terrifying rise of fascist activity have all impacted the community.

Newham has the highest rate of temporary accommodation in the country with over 7300 homeless households. Over 60,000 residents are in receipt of Universal Credit, and 20% of the population is estimated to be vulnerable, including those with disabilities or long-term health needs.

We started in the depths of Covid, inspired by the way our neighbourhood had organised to look after one another. We increasingly saw the lack of money as the pressing need which wasn’t being met in our borough and set out to build a sustainable platform to address that need within the community.

Many of us want to address harm in our communities, but it's hard to know what to do when police responses often don't help and make things worse.
Are you interested in building individual and collective capacities for navigating conflict and harm that don't rely on policing and prisons?

Volunteer with us-
We are always looking for people to help with running the fund. This could be helping with the admin process, helping our social media presence, or organising our attendance at events.

If you feel you can help out with any of these, or anything different, please get in touch!

How can you help?
We are looking for backers and volunteers. We also have merch!

Become a backer-
You can back the fund financially on our website. Monthly donations are particularly welcome. We are a voluntary organisation so 100% of the money you donate will go to Newham residents.

What are we doing?
Raising money to give out £50 grants directly to Newham residents on the basis of solidarity, trust and good will. Anyone in Newham can receive a grant from us. We only ask for proof of address. We believe people deserve the dignity of choosing how they spend their own money.
