Pleased to discover that slightly misnaming the national chess championship you won as a school child is a much more serious offence than repeatedly racially abusing your fellow pupils and telling them they should go to the gas chamber

The more I think about it, the more bizarre I find the accusation that the Chancellor deliberately exaggerated the dire state of the finances in order to justify tax rises. The extent to which there is 'exaggeration' means more for fiscal headroom, which is what everyone wanted her to pursue 1/

If you subscribe to my writing, ever have done, ever have any vague intention of doing so, I'd appreciate if you took a quick read of this..
I'm not going back to Substack. I will continue to post my newsletters from Ghost. But I did have to get back in there, just to post this and let people who thought I'd vanished know about this utter nightmare: substack.com/home/post/p-...
An Explanation (Which I Would Be Very Grateful If You Took The Time To Read)
What follows is a minor modern horror story.

Feel like I'm going mad. The Budget's 'headroom' is based on frankly irresponsible and wildly optimistic claims about what Labour will do in the final year of the forecast, and on ignoring a bunch of upward pressures on spending, and the claim is that she was being exaggeratedly *pessimistic*?
Suggestion Rachel Reeves exaggerated fiscal pressures is absurd
Chancellor was instead far too optimistic about public finances and government’s ability to secure cuts

In fairness, the article does refer to the complainant as a "teenage trans woman" in an earlier paragraph.
I don’t know enough about the situation with Lineham to opine on whether the judgement is valid or not, but everything about this paragraph in the BBC article makes me despair at how many institutions have been captured by the GC movement

Elon Musk is once again inciting violence on British streets because the government has taught him there are literally no consequences for doing so.

They even carry on using his far-right social network to promote government policy as he does it. The absence of backbone is *astounding*.

How A Publisher Almost Killed The Book I Waited My Whole Life To Write: a thread

My novel Villager came out in 2022. It was published by Unbound, who had little marketing/sales power. But I was excited & proud, since I worked so f-ing hard on it.

Social media is full of one set of people shouting that Angela Rayner is an evil tax evader who deserves jail, and another set shouting she's an innocent wrongly accused.

Real life is more boring than that.

A short piece in today's Times.

There is a lot of deflection taking place by politicians this morning, suggesting that the court kept the superinjunction in place and that had to be overcome.

That's not true or not complete- the government kept it in place by repeatedly applying for its renewal.

What they don't say: it would cost the UK £34bn
