I enjoy writing code that generates worlds, and occasionally I get together with friends to make video games.

(Also love all the lore updates you’ve been posting!)

Is the ?? a placeholder for a sprite, or is that part of the game (like some unknowable thing is lurking there?)

Hope you figure it out 😵‍💫 Is the map generated ahead of time or on the fly?

Nice! Does one screen store the values it generated along its edge so the next screen can fit to them, or is the continuity achieved based on a shared noise function or something?

Also if you switch to dark mode then the map will follow suit :)

Thanks! Briefly it's: 1/ form continents from voronoi cells; 2/ treat each cell as a tectonic plate moving in a random direction, and form mountain ranges wherever two plates collide; 3/ set elevation based on distance to mountain/ocean; 4/ flow all potential rivers and keep only the longest ones

Loving this series :) Btw what tools do you use for pixel art? I've mostly used Piskel in the past but curious what else is out there

Great talk and very cool demos! When you add in forests as you mentioned, do you think their occurrence would be determined by the CA rules from earlier in terrain formation? It seems like those CA rules give a great starting point (eg the spongy areas might have wetlands or mangroves)

Beautiful! Very useful that it includes all the symbols too

👋👋👋 I’ve yet to combine the two directly (past worldgen projects have been C# and OCaml) but I’ve been thinking of making one in Zig so I can run it in the browser via wasm

Any Zig libraries you’d recommend for worldgen stuff?
